the real story in Palin's atrociious speechifying is being missed
Her Convention speech wowed the room and made some on DU have a brief uh-oh moment. Were McCain's writer so much better than what She has available to her now? Of course not. You would think that any number of operatives would be lining up talented speechwriters for her farewell address. But the speech was terrible, lacked vision, and did nothing to set the stage for what is next. Is he honestly thinks for a second that she can run for president like this there is no hope for her.

This might be the most telling signal of how far her stock has fallen among people who were lining up to ride her straight to the bank just a few months ago.

2. I think her speeches really show how much of a neophyte she is
Not because they are terrible but because she does not understand how important they are to the process.

10. How about this--
It may not be "Shermanesque" but it's all I got:

Dear DUers,

It has been an honor to have served low these many seconds as your mayor but now I must step down so that I may better serve.

God bless DU.

By the way, we post, therefore we type.

PS send money to my PAC!

5. I think she genuinely doesn't see the problem with her speeches
I bet she just sits down and writes a speech train-of-thought, and she somehow thinks that that's genuine.

I would suggest that she make an outline. :hide:

14. Well why not? She understands them
Her speeches make perfect sense to her. As they do to people who like her. It must be some synaptic mis-trigger or hiccup.

6. Actually I think you need to take the analysis one stage further

They had pleny of time.

They had plenty of offers of help.

They have enough money to buy the best brains around.

They have two big problems;

They don't trust senior people in their own party

and

They can't tell the difference between a great speech and incoherent ramblings.

Its' kind of like watching Dick Nixon without any brains.

8. Her problem is
the only advisers she will listen to are the advisers that tell her what she wants to hear.

I get the impression that anyone who would tell her "You should say this instead" doesn't get to hang around for long.

Anyone that could have helped her is reluctant to go near her now.

Think about her repeatedly hounding McCain's campaign director to spin Todd's involvement with the party that advocates secession from the US. She kept on with that after they explained to her at least twice that it was best not to discuss it at all.

Would you want to work for someone like that?

12. Her problem is
that her brain doesn't work right. Language is thought. When you hear her speak, you are hearing her mind, her thought processes. This is how the woman thinks.

Palin would make a great case study in Abnormal Psychology. An under-performer with delusions of adequacy. A muddled thinker unashamed to parade her ignorance and lack of smarts in public. What a weirdo!

20. It seems to occur when she talks about the media.
In this latest speech there was a flurry of finger-pointing (somewhat akin to Elaine's dance moves on Seinfeld) just as she built to the nonsensical "Quit makin' things up" line. Today I saw a clip from an earlier speech in which she also burst into pointing while whining about how unfair the media is to her.

16. I am not convinced of that
The base loves her and if she can compete in Iowa. she wins South Carolina. ANd the Republican who wins the SC primary has been winning the nominations for a generation.

It really come down to Iowa organization. and the size of the field. Pawlenty has a regional base and Huckabee and Romney both have organizations already in place. She runes a hard right organization and get the not of the fundy organizations she will finish in the top three. If she finishes ahead of Huckabee she has a great shot because the while Romney should win NH, but wont win SC. And I am not sure Pawlenty plays well there unless he wins big in Iowa and does really well in NH.

Understand however that I think she has no. shot at all at the White House. But I sure want her to win the nomination.

19. Perky, I agree.
There's a large segment of Republicans who think she's wonderful, refreshing, "different" (THAT'S an understatement), and a whole host of other flattering adjectives. I don't think we've heard the last of her -- and since she's "unplugged" now, it should be pretty interesting to watch what happens next.

29. Could be..
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 10:57 AM by Mopar151
The trick here is to throw the right amount of red meat to the cement-headed "base", while appearing reasonable, polite, and aimiable/humble to the moderate center - and nix on the big campaign staff and front men (like Mittens did here last time).

Remember, McCain 1.0 beat the shrub here handily, but McCain 2.3 got a a big scare from Ron Paul.

Queen Wa-silla will get demolished here - our "base" is smitten, but the political hobbyists who people the "coffees" and "townhalls" here will take turns tripping her up and dismantling her.

LIKES her politics, 'cuz they identify with her loopy illogic and wack-a-doodle speaking style. And they SO want someone of like mind to beleive in. But in li'l ol' NH, we know who most of 'em are (google Stretch Kennedy and Harriet Cady) and we take it into account.

23. Her habit seems to be
to write ideas down on note cards and then just extemporize. "Sarah being Sarah." She believes she's quite clever, and you have to admit that something about the way she speaks drives the base wild. I don't get it myself, but it's there and it's undeniable.

24. She certainly is supremely self-confident.
Watch her face when she gets the Bush Doctrine question. Clearly she has no idea what the guy is talking about, but she tries to brazen it out with BS, not a trace of doubt showing in her expression.

This smug, self-righteous certainty (even when breathtakingly wrong) is one of the things I like least about wingnuts, especially in person.

27. it's hard to believe she got a communications degree......
it sounds like she never took an English class or a comp class.

There was an article I saw here on DU recently about how ignorance/stupidity is the new 'earthy/ down to earth'. The dumber the better they are liked because she is simple....just like them.

If this is true (and it appears that it is) I fear that the movie Idiocracy could become a reality in our lifetime.
