Barbara Boxer and Carly Fiorina Neck and Neck in CA: I know, it is Rasmussen's poll
A close Senate race in California?
By: Michael Barone
Senior Political Analyst
07/28/09 10:20 AM EDT

Excerpt:
Pollster Scott Rasmussen reports that California Senator Barbara Boxer leads possible Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett Packard CEO and 2008 campaigner for John McCain, by only 45%-41%. That’s a pretty stunning result. The only other public poll conducted pairing these two, conducted by Field in February, showed Boxer leading 55%-25%. That looks a lot like Boxer’s 2004 58%-38% victory over Republican Bill Jones. The Rasmussen result looks more like Boxer’s 1992 48%-43% victory over Republican Bruce Herschensohn or her California colleague Dianne Feinstein’s 1994 47%-45% victory over Michael Huffington

Today, with the Democratic brand in some trouble (though the Republican brand remains tarnished), candidate recruitment is starting to work in Republicans’ favor. Jim Bunning has bowed to party pressure and is retiring from the seat he barely held in 2004; this spares the Republicans a messy primary between incumbent and challenger. Mark Kirk, after some hesitation, is running in Illinois. Christopher Dodd’s ad buys in Connecticut have not repaired his dreadful number and he is running well behind Republican Rob Simmons. Majority Leader Harry Reid continues to have terrible numbers in Nevada, where as many as half the 2010 voters will never have seen his name on a ballot before. Congressman-at-Large Mike Castle, leading Attorney General Beau Biden in polls in Delaware, seems to be leaning toward making the race. Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-Democrat Arlen Specter has a primary challenger and runs only even with the man who nearly beat him in the 2004 Republican primary, Pat Toomey. Appointees Bennet and Gillibrand are far from safe in Colorado and New York, although neither seems to have a strong Republican opponent yet. That is also true of Arkansas’s Blanche Lincon.

14. Not legitimately, anyway.
And if they try any shenanigans I can't see B-Box not fighting it.

IOW, bring it.

3. There's no way this can be true.
With 14% undecided, I'd guess that you could add 8-9 to Boxer's total and then MAYBE you'd have a good result.

4. There is absolutely no way. Boxer is loved in California.
She'll beat Fiorina by at least 10 points, and that's giving Fiorina lots of credit for possible support from Silicon Valley.

17. Me too. I'd rather Feinstein become CA Governor, and let Feinstein's Senate seat go towards a
progressive like Boxer.

23. I don't think Silicon Valley would touch her
When Carly Fiorina took the helm of Hewlett-Packard, they made two categories of merchandise: the kind of computers that sell primarily on price, and one of the most beloved brands of test and measurement equipment in the world. When Fiorina was kicked out of HP, the part that made serious money had been spun off into Agilent.

Gee, guys...do ya think maybe she got rid of the wrong part?

13. that video of her asking to be called Senator is going to haunt on TV

I think that could be the straw in the camel's back in Orange County and moderate areas as well. It tee'd me off personally because I think it showed bad form. I think people are going to start voting for candidates more, and party less, and she may be the first casualty of that.

Boxer's one of the more leftish senators and I strongly support her (unlike Feinstein, for whom I'd vote while holding my nose). At the same time, she doesn't have much charisma or obvious warmth, which makes a lot of more casual voters go "meh" at this stage and costs her in the polls this far out. I suppose that Harry Alford's racebaiting horseshit isn't helping her polls just now, either. All the same it beggars the imagination that deep-blue California would send her packing. Democrats who are saying "meh" now will still vote, and California Republicans will be less than enthusiastic for a moderate like Fiorina, just as they failed to come through for Ed Zschau, who lost to incumbent Sen. Alan Cranston in 86.

McCain's campaign tanked a little bit more. I wouldn't waste my my powder but Republicans are stupid.

32. Story conveniently ignores more recent Field poll done in June
in recent polling Dodd is no longer running well behing Simmons-the gap between the two has closed to within the margin of error of the polls.

I'd take this story with a grain of salt.
