Peter Hart "Don't get fooled by the numbers alone because there is something that is stronger there"
What Do Poll Numbers Really Mean for Obama?

By Dan Balz

There are several new polls out over the last 24 hours that show more problems for President Obama. The trend lines are consistent: declining support for his health care plan, rising worries about the deficit and slippage in his approval ratings. But what if the polls are wrong?
Not wrong in the sense that they have incorrectly charted a downward slope for the president after six months in office, but wrong in the sense that they don't entirely capture the dynamic of this moment in the Obama presidency.

I raise that question after spending Wednesday night in Towson, Md., observing a focus group conducted by pollster Peter Hart
for the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.
Hart assembled 12 independent voters -- seven who supported Obama last November, four who backed John McCain and one who had voted for Ralph Nader. The two-hour session was eye-opening for Hart and a group of journalists.

-snip-
The most arresting moment came when Hart asked everyone to recall how they felt on election night when they knew Obama had been elected president. It was as if the room was transported back to Chicago's Grant Park for the celebration of Obama's victory.

-snip-
But Obama has made a powerful, personal connection with these voters. They are not tired of him nor have they given up on his leadership. That was very clear at the end of the two-hour discussion.
Given all the country's problems and the difficulties Obama has encountered, the group's closing comments were almost as striking as the recollections of election night. They were almost universally hopeful that Obama can and will succeed.

-snip-
Obama at six months has hit a difficult patch and no one can be certain about the outcome. But if these dozen independent voters are any guide, he has created a strong bond with the public and a fair amount of good will as he battles for his agenda.
Hart had spent the day digesting the results of an NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll that showed warning signs for the president. But as Hart put it when the session in Towson ended, "Don't get fooled by the numbers alone because there is something that is stronger there -- and that surprised me and I thought that was important."

2. We need to remember election night...
When the polls were mixed and freaking people out... and we all settled in with snacks and beverages, ready to face the dawn if need be, to see the results of the election.

My favorite wing-backed chair hadn't even warmed up... my cold beverage glass hadn't even attracted condensation yet... before Obama was declared the winner.

We need to stop letting them tell us how we feel. And we need to call them on the dishonesty.

12. The polls were mixed?
I don't remember that. I knew we were going to whip ass from a month prior to the election and my electoral college prediction was only off by one. I was the guy telling all my liberal family members to relax and enjoy. It felt *great*.

16. I'm talking Rasmussen and other RW tripe...
And the RW spin machine that dominated the media coverage in the days leading up. Plus, I just wasn't so sure they weren't going to steal it again. I'm sure they tried, and the spin machine had laid groundwork for the fight. But the Obama wave of support was just to overwhelming, and any vote flipping machines were outnumbered. I was shocked as hell to see it called for Obama by 8PM or so PST.

Ahhh... it's sort of like the commercial with the lotto winning family reliving their win all over again.

10. You're welcome. I found it soothing although it doesn't say anything I didn't already know.

(I think that means - Broder - your time is over, retire already).

Since it is by a straight reporter who helps frame conventional wisdom in the Pundit yapping circles, I think this is good.

Hopefully it tamps down or tempers some of the silly "Oh NOES!! his presidency is over" type crap from the press. It certainly wont stop it because they like the story line but I do think it helps take a little wind out of their sails.

5. Obama Himself Said He Won't Be Able To Do Everything Right &.....
invited people - if they are not happy with things he is doing - to be critical. But bottom line I support him and his administration in just about everything they do. I'm not happy how some of this healthcare reform is going and I am critical of him - so I guess if a poll caught me at a time when I didn't agree with exactly how he is going about things - I would line up in the critical side.

7. Agreed.
His left flank is pretty critical right now, me included. But in no way does that mean we're voting for Republicans in the next election. Being critical of Obama does not make us Republicans all of a sudden.

8. On Monday evening
I had a very politically conservative lady tell me she had not voted for Obama nor did she particularly like him but still there was something about him that made her feel comfortable. Initially I was somewhat confused by what she said but after thinking on it there became something very telling. It is the bonding that Hart talks about. I believe Obama has hidden political capital of which I am not sure he is even aware.

"he has created a strong bond with the public and a fair amount of good will as he battles for his agenda." This is very heartening to hear.

15. His personal connection with voters may be why some are so hard on him
We expect a lot out of the guy, but high expectations are better then thinking he is a waste of air (like Bush).
