I hate the NRA - "NRA opposition fails to sway senators on Sotomayor"
WASHINGTON – The National Rifle Association's threat to punish senators who vote for Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor has been met with a shrug by Democrats from conservative-leaning states and some Republicans who are breaking with their party to support her.
The gun rights group is used to getting its way by spooking lawmakers about the political consequences of defying its wishes. But it never before has weighed in on a Supreme Court confirmation battle. It was cautious about breaking that pattern, and it looks like a losing a fight to defeat President Barack Obama's first pick for the court.
Sotomayor is expected to easily win confirmation in a vote this coming week that could deflate the long-accepted truism in Washington that you don't cross the NRA.
Voting "yes" will include A-plus-rated and NRA-endorsed Democratic Sen. Max Baucus and his fellow Montanan, A-rated Sen. Jon Tester, as well as A-rated and NRA-endorsed Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander, the only GOP leader to break with the rest of this party to back Sotomayor.
That's not to say that the NRA's late decision to wade in hasn't had an impact.
Many Republicans who were considered possible "yes" votes for Sotomayor — including Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, Georgia Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, and Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison — have come out against her after the NRA's announcement, citing gun rights concerns as an important reason.

2. If only the ACLU would protect the WHOLE Bill of Rights..
The NRA would disappear as a political power..

BTW, the NRA has gave FAR MORE MONEY, to Democrats, than the Republican lead Brady Campain...

6. Yeah, and if only ice cream was free
The ACLU has led most of the legal battles to stop torture, disclose rendition, restore habeas corpus, stop illegal wiretapping, restore the right to legal counsel, stop military tribunals, restore the rights of library users, defend the right to demonstrate against the Iraq War, and about 20 other issues. They've been kept fairly busy for the last 10 years and the fights are far from over.

I donate as much money as I am able to help fund these efforts. If you're really interested in expanding the role of the ACLU, the best method is to write a letter to the national office with your ideas and enclose a large check and encourage your co-thinkers to do likewise.

Why yes, I've been a member for over 30 years.

16. The ACLU has done many a great thing
Defended, fought for,and helped secure many civil rights. However their choice to ignore the Second Amendment has exposed them for what they are. And has exposed their biased anti-gun agenda. Their choice to hack and slash at the Bill of Rights has proved to me that they can not be trusted. No matter the good they do in other areas of the law, they can not be trusted with all our rights.
I love the ACLU, but I donate to the NRA.

19. Yeah, Your Love For The ACLU Just Flows From Your Post.

And no, the ACLU has not chosen "to ignore the Second Amendment," as anybody with a brain bigger than a small pistol primer well understands; the ACLU has adhered to a well-regarded interpretation of the 2nd that differs from that of the NRA and Fat Tony Scalia, and people like you are permanently enraged about it.

Bonus question: Expand on your claim that the ACLU's stance on the 2nd "...has exposed them for what they are." Very interesting choice of words, very interesting indeed. Care to tell us what you really mean?

9. If Only Gun Obsessives Cared About The WHOLE Bill Of Rights.

What percentage of your posts here at DU deal with the 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or any part of the BOR besides the 2nd Amendment and the guns issue? If you're like most of your guncentric pals, it's probably less than 5%. The gun militancy movement's habit of constantly shit-canning the ACLU because the organization's interpretation of the 2nd doesn't please the likes of Ted Nugent is shameful---particularly in a Democratic forum.

And for any of you who believe that the National Rifle Association is going warm and cuddly over Democrats and liberal thought, Google "NRA Comic Book" and take a good hard look......

3. The NRA would support
whoever the GOP candidate is regardless of how any of these Senators vote for Sotomayor. It doesn't matter what their current NRA rating is.

4. The NRA: Rebels who lost their cause.
If felons were allowed full-auto assault weapons while still in prison, the NRA would bitch about ammo not being free.

They left sanity a while ago.

10. I view the gun nuts as "the second armory".
Take out every official US arms depot, and true gunsmiths can make weapons from raw materials.

The ones that really annoy me are the fetishists, the folks who don't know jack about building a barrel, or a trigger, or a round, and want to preserve their "right" to have plastic things that go boom.

Sadly, most NRA members cannot build a weapon from raw metal stocks.

Lordy, boppers, that's liable to get you some ugly responses from the No Such Thing As An Assault Rifle contingent here at DU. My compliments......

14. My father's a gunsmith.
I learned a lot at his bench.

I have no fear of people "grabbing my guns", because I can simply make another. If I wanted to make a full auto machine firearm that looked like a backpack, I could, if I wanted to make a 10 inch gas-recoil gun, I could. Lately I've been puzzling out the best way of making a home nuke, the biggest barrier at this point is materials.

I also don't keep firearms in the house, because I feel that such devices are most appropriate for hunting, and warfare, and neither activity should occur in my house.

18. wow the gun humpers de-rec'd this into teh neg's...
i think you may have hit a nerve.

And please when i say gun humpers I don't mean responsible hunters, who respect these weapons for what they are... killing tools.
(of course I'm guilty of brutalizing the same can till it was 5' in the air... then my aim got wobbly)

I mean the people who really fetishize weapons as some kind of romantic thing.

Guns have one purpose, to kill. punt uit.

After you accept that reality, it's easy to be sensible about them.
