The real injustice of the 'beer summit' -- No Beers from American Companies
Edited on Sat Aug-01-09 05:15 PM by steven johnson
The 'birthers' now have a real issue. Obama has surrounded hemself with beer brewed by foreign corporations.

Has he finally outsourced his shame?

...it came as a rude shock to some when TV commentators noted that the first choices of President Barack Obama, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge, Mass., police on Thursday afternoon included two domestic beers owned by outsiders — Bud Light and Blue Moon — and a Jamaican import, Red Stripe.
Obama’s Bud Light is brewed by St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, which supplies 48.9 percent of the market, making it the country’s biggest producer. But a Belgian-Brazilian giant acquired it in November 2008. Now called Anheuser-Busch InBev, the Leuven, Belgium-based company is the world’s top brewer.

'Beer summit’ brews up another debate: foreign ownership

1. Another manufactured controversy
He was having some folks over for a beer, not doing a beer commercial.

Some people have entirely too much free time. :eyes:

2. Welcome to the world of 2009. It's a bit difficult to distinguish "home grown" from not.
It's also meaningless.

Oh -- Bud Light is a glass of urine after being fully hydrated. Who cares who owns that company?

11. I am shocked that you do not support American products
Rush Limbaugh used OxyContin, hilbilly heroin, produced by Purdue Pharma, an American company. He supported the American worker.

Using recreational psychoactive agents from indiscriminant sources shows a lack of 'America-First' patriotism.

Would you use Columbian cocaine instead of good-old home grown crank? I think not!

I'm betting Fox News people get blindingly drunk on domestic lagers and spirits. I hope you will appreciate how important it is to distroy you brain with American products.

29. 'Crank' is a slang term for methamphetamine
Methamphetamine is the domesticaly produced stimulant alternative to cocaine.

Buy American!

6. I was just disappointed that no one was drinking Guinness, but really who cares...
A lot of domestics suck and are way overcarbonated. Good domestics cost as much as imports for the most part. For the record, I don't care for any of the beers they drank, I wish professor Gates would have went with his other said preferred beer which was Becks.

But really, it doesn't matter what they drank, the fact that the whole thing went down the way it did is a testament to how different the Obama Presidential era is and how its all ready producing some good stories for history.

Even though the rest have foreign control, they still have heavy minority interest (usually 46-49%) and employ hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Now that I am THAT snob: I only wish more Americans would visit local micro-breweries and beerpubs, and get a taste of a local Porter or Stout, or a hoppy IPA, or (my preference) an effervescent Hefeweizen in a supercold glass, with a lemon twist ....

but there were complaints that he should go for the local brew and he then switched to Sam Adams.

It's all smoke and mirrors folks, even when it comes to the PC rules of beer drinking. Who really thinks that a yuppie like Obama regularly drinks Bud Light?

41. None...that's what you call a master at shit stirring.
I just don't get this. I don't care what beer anyone drinks. Anyway American beer is manufactured crap except for SA. And the only reason SA is different is because it's brewed differently. I only drink European beer because it is the only beer I can tolerate (and I like a good beer).

Further more, even if a beer was European, which is meaningless in the profound importance of the situation, it was all stuff made in the US with US companies. So it's more a European-American brand. It means nothing. We live in a society where we're connected and everything is world wide. This shit needs to die and go away and when people try to find ways to negate the importance through petty shit...we definitely need to move on.

The OP about Red Stripe just wants to do that and have something to push...I say we ignore the crap really. I saw a past post where Larry Flynt was used as some sort of credibility---that's enough for us to realize the intent and just roll our eyes at pettiness.

42. You're fuckin' kidding me?! I live in New York City in Spanish Harlem and that's not yuppie.
My personal trainer is a dude who uses ghettocize (which you may never have heard about---aka body weight exercises) as a great form of athleticism, which it is. Organic tea can be bought at Rite Aid from .75-1.50 in a bottle. And arugula was the only one high end, but after the Spinach scare-----arugula got killed off as high end because we were told to buy arugala since it had a similar nutrient count and now it's everywhere and far from what people would call yuppieville.

But all in all...Dear God your post is pathetic.

33. LOL. Never tried that before.
I honestly usually stick to Smirnoff Ice since I had a bad "incident" with mixed drinks about a year ago. My husband made me try shots and two Stolis and some other mixed crap. Never again. I cannot handle it. Besides, I am a diabetic and even at 33 my mom yells at me for even drinking a beer (it lowers your blood sugar when you are on insulin, you could pass out). For beer I only have a Bud Light lime, not regular Bud Light...yuck. Or a Corona with a lime in it. I can't handle much.

I'm sorry to hear that you're a diabetic. Yeah, your mom is right, alcohol is no good for diabetics. You like vodka? Me too. My favorite drink is a Cape Codder (vodka & cranberry juice). We had an event after work last Monday and I was baaaad, I had 5 of them and a Cosmopolitan that one of the girls didn't want (no sense in wasting good liquor). It made up for the previous weekend when I was the designated driver and only had 2 beers. Hee hee......

Vodka is okay as far as liquor goes...
Yeah, I shouldn't drink much but sometimes I want to have a little something. I never drink unless I got out somewhere and with a 4 year old and a 5 year old, well that is infrequently. I go to see my husband's band play now and then...he plays in Albany sometimes (at the Bayou). Crazy, crazy times. I'm just glad I was not there for St. Patrick's day two years ago. It was a bit out of control. Luckily, he only has a few drinks and does not try to keep up with some of the crazy drunk guys in his audience.

They are a fun bunch. One of the things that I miss about acting is hanging out with so many creative people.

I used to go to Troy frequently because one of my friends had a daughter at RPI (she studied architecture). Anyway, one of our favorite hangouts was the Albany Pump Station. Ever been there? It's a cool place, it's in an old warehouse in downtown Albany. It's now a microbrewery and restaurant, they also have great cider.

It's fun, whenever I'm up there I get the beer sample. It's a selection of 8 of their brews. The cider is also very tasty. The food is OK, but not much different than other places. What makes it special is the atmosphere, I love the building.
