The Crafting of President Obama's Cairo Speech (Warning: have tissues nearby)

From the L.A. Times

'A musical impulse'

Obama went over the new text on Air Force One as he flew to an overnight stop in Saudi Arabia. As he read, he nodded, pausing now and then to ink in a thought or a suggestion.

That night, at the Riyadh ranch of King Abdullah, Obama had cardamom tea with the Saudi ruler. Emanuel went for a run in the 110-degree heat. Then Obama holed up with him, Axelrod and other senior staffers. Their buffet dinner simmered over cans of Sterno as they studied the text.

At midnight, the door to the staff work space creaked open. The president and his personal aide, Reggie Love, were delivering more changes.

On the two-hour flight to Cairo the next morning, Obama continued to tinker with the words and whisper parts of the speech to himself.

"He's very focused on both content and cadence," said Axelrod, "so he'll move the order of words around in order to get the cadence that he wants. . . . It's almost a musical impulse -- how the words play against each other."

Rhodes would punch each change into his laptop, then walk to the back of the plane and read them to the Arabic translator.

"You've had a tough job," Obama said as they landed in the Egyptian capital.

A motorcade sped them through the streets. Then, surreally, the frenetic pace was interrupted as the president paused to tour the Sultan Hassan Mosque, one of the world's oldest.

Hussain from the White House counsel's office joined Rhodes, McDonough and others trailing behind Obama.

Afterward, there was a hint that the Cairo speech achieved at least one goal -- reaching over the heads of leaders and making contact with ordinary Muslims.

Paul Salem, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center, heard poignant evidence of that.

A friend in Cairo told Salem that on the day of the speech, he saw a little boy walking along the street, a smile on his face as he chanted in a soft, singsong voice: "Obama quoted the Koran. Obama quoted the Koran."

20. Sadly, probably not. We have a Limbaugh Left mob here who hate Democrats, Obama, Unions ...
and everything they consider, "the system," and will say anything, not matter how crazy, to express that hatred, and will unrec anything positive about them.

24. A tissue? If I'm weeping, it's for the Afghan children we're blowing to bits with Obama's consent
What a piece of fluff. Yes, Obama is a million times better than that illegitimate pretender Commander Codpiece who wreaked destruction here and around the globe for eight endless years. But one of the lingering PTSD affects we suffer is blithering gratitude that Obama acts like a statesman. I could go on about what Obama didn't say in Cairo, but I won't - I don't have time, and why bother. And no, I did not "unrec" - a function I consider childish and stupid in almost all cases.

26. A piece of fluff?
Do you feel that any communication that might lessen international tension, cause those of other nations to utter grudging respect for the American President has no merit...to the point that you would call it "fluff"?

And why would you call the gratitude that many of us DUers have for the statesman-like persona of Obama "blithering"? Would you prefer that he not exhibit those skills admired by many of us?

Why don't you "go on about what Obama didn't say in Cairo.."? Surely you have the time to provide some basis for your diatribe, just as you had the time to post your sharp condemnation. Why bother? Because we are not little children. If there is some merit to your charge, let us examine it, support it or refute it to the extent of our abilities.

I totally concur with your opinion of the "unrec" feature. That is not to say that others don't find it useful, merely my biased opinion.

33. yeah no tears here either
I work fulltime caring for those with developmental disabilities; care for my folks; trying to finish a book; and I can't find the correct comma symbol on my phone. Where's my fluff peace. But I guess I'm supposed to sit hear patiently until he deigns to address the injustices that plague my friends and neighbors.

35. Sounds like your "plate" is pretty full.
Your caring for family and others is a commendable undertaking. Thanks for what you do...from a stranger. I'm lost as to why someone would need a comma symbol on a phone but that's just me. At nearly seventy, I get lost a lot with respect to modern conveniences.

For my edification, please explain what you mean by "Where is my fluff peace." Or, even, "Where is my fluff piece?" And, why would you guess that you are supposed to sit "hear", here, there or anywhere? Supposed by whom? Who is suggesting that you wait patiently for anything? Who is the "he" that is deigning or not deigning? What "injustices" are plaguing your friends and neighbors?

Please elucidate in order that others of us can understand your plight and, perhaps, respond accordingly.
