Obama's "Read my lips, NO NEW TAXES" coming back to haunt him?
I just turned on cable news (something I rarely do). Both CNN and MSNBC ran stories about the potential for tax hikes for the "middle class" (under 250K) in the near future. Both cited Geitner and Summers dropping clues over the weekend that tax hikes will be necessary to balance the budget after the economy recovers. Of course the health bill is also under scrutiny for it's tax liabilities.

I can only assume that Fox has picked up on this too but I can't bring myself to watch that one today.

1. Obama will make the decision whether it haunts him or not.
If Congress tries to raise taxes on the middle class, Obama has the power to veto the bill.

21. what do you define as middle class?
Even though he said $250,000 in the campaign, I suspect that even if he raised the taxes on everyone over $150,000 or $100,000, he would be ok - as long as other things were considerably better.

2. Obama needs to take both Geithner and Summers behind the woodshed
Those two have done nothing but undermine Obama with the average guy since taking their jobs.

3. I also heard that Obama is going to kill my grandparents.
If the media says it, it must be true. Right?

8. True, the media is a cesspool but the quotes came out of Summers and Geithner's mouths.
GEITHNER: Well, we're going to have to look at – we're going to have to do what's necessary. Remember the critical thing is people understand that when we have recovery established, led by the private sector, then we have to bring these deficits down very dramatically. We have to bring them down to a level where the amount we're borrowing from the world is stable at a reasonable level. And that's going to require some very hard choices. And we're going to have to do that in a way that does not add unfairly to the burdens that the average American already faces.

http://www.abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/Politics/Story?id=8232342&page=2

He doesn't want to UNFAIRLY add to our burden but apparently it will be OK to FAIRLY add to the burden of the average American. And not a word about the "private sector" (read: my pals on Wall street) paying back the billions they're making from the bailout.

Geithner needs to GO!

4. This is typical of the administration's style.
Publically they don't rule anything out. Whereas I usually agree with this tactic, I think that when discussing taxes they need to draw that line in the sand unless they are actually going to increase them. Either say they will never be increased, or just increase them and let the fallout happen. This is a talking point that could have been avoided.

Summers and Geithner dropped no clues about middle class tax hikes.

Its so transparent what cable "news" is doing. They are trying to bury health reform by bringing up this issue of taxes.

12. The media is jizzing over Geithner and Summers refusing to say "no new taxes"
That omission doesn't mean taxes are going up for the middle class, and everything from the White House indicates the exact opposite of the media spin. There is nothing behind this nonsense but more GOP fear.

17. I hope Obama knows that his enemies on the left, are a much bigger
threat to his agenda, than those on the right. By continually spreading bullshit like this, fact-free & rumor mongering, we undermine his agenda, at our own peril.

Actually not same
The media is trying to make the connection, but they ignore one major difference. Bush was a Republican where taxes are the biggest sins imaginable, while Obama is a Democrat. Then magnitude of possible tax increases and the number of people who will get them (ie middle class does not really go all the way up to $250,000.), will likely not be a big problem in 3 years - if healthcare is improved, foreign policy problems and war reduced, and the economy is doing even adequately. (Given where he came in, it has to be up.)

19. Is being forced to purchase a defective product like
Big Industry sponsored health insurance going to be considered a tax?

Is paying extra for our heating bills due to "Cap and Trade" Act a new tax?

And paying tax is actually a privilege - many are jobless and will remain so. Geithenr/Bernancke's recovery is mostly jobless one - we woyuld need to create over 2.2 million jobs just to employ those laid off in the last eight months.

Then we need to delve into a discussion of the coming Hyper Inflation - and how inflation is always an indirect tax on the middle incomed and lower classes.

23. You can read the daily press
briefing where Gibbs flat out says it ain't gonna happen.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Briefing-by-White-House-Press-Secretary-Robert-Gibbs-8/3/09/

No surprise Jake Trapper asked the question about 17 different ways, trying to trip him up. Didn't work.

Gibbs flatly denied it in today's briefing. I'm pretty sure a "flat denial" is stronger than "clues."
