New Gallup Poll - Bad News, TERRIBLE News, for The Republican Party

New Gallup Poll - Bad News, TERRIBLE News, for The Republican Party

by Shane Hensinger

Chris Cillizza in the WaPo highlighted a new poll out today on party identification by state which contains not a grain of good news - for the Republican party

37

That's the number of states that are either solidly or leaning Democratic in a series of Gallup tracking polls conducted over the first six months of 2009. Only eight states are solidly or leaning Republicans in that same data.

The numbers, which are based on party identification of adults in national tracking polls, paint a stark portrait of the challenge facing Republicans not just in the 2010 midterm election but also in the 2012 presidential race.

The Republicans currently have an edge in just 5 states, Alaska, Alabama, Idaho, Utah and Wyoming. Since the last Gallup poll in 2008 measuring voter ID by state, 9 states have changed classification from one category to another. Virginia, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, South Dakota and Nebraska moved from the Republican category to the Democrat, Colorado, Nevada and Alabama moved toward the Republicans.

To put this in starker terms. Add up all the states which strongly identify as Republican and you have a total of 15 electoral votes. Do the same for the Democrats and you have a total of 350 electoral votes. Not a typo - 15 electoral votes for the Republicans and 350 for the Dems.

Declining poll numbers are transitory but voter ID tends to be more static. This poll is a stark reminder of the problems Republicans face in moving from their status as a regionally-based party into one with national appeal. Remember this when you here the pundits breathlessly predicting a "Republican comeback." It's going to be hard to have a comeback when you've only got a majority of voters in five states.

Please allow the wingnuts to continue making fools of themselves. Thank you.

6. This may be a Repugs lowering expectations poll as I'm sure Arizona is not
even close to "competitive". Any state that would send Bush' rear-end cleaner Kyl and McLame to the Senate is awash in the Republican party hallmark: ignorance.

Of course I'd like it to be true, but time will tell. I'll settle for a trend.

94. I don't know. I live here. It's gone Republican the last few elections, yes..
..but only went for Bush in the lower single digits in 2000 and 2004 (where I think the difference between he and Kerry was something like 3 pts)? And this past year, McCain only won it in the single digits (and he's OUR Senator!) The only reason it was not a swing state this time around was because it was his state, but even then he failed to pull off a sizeable lead, even though Obama didn't even actively campaign here in the GE. I think it could very well be up for grabs in 2012 AND McCain's seat in 2010, if he actually goes through with this vote against Sotomayor and we put up a credible challenger.

It's hardly a solid red state, either. More like a purple one at this point. :)

Probably not going to happen, but (not factoring in the EC changes after the 2010 Census), Obama would win 439-35 with 64 up for grabs!

Edited on Mon Aug-03-09 07:03 PM by cascadiance
As the study notes, a lot of people aren't leaning to either party but are shifting to independent status. Someone like Bernie Sanders in a three way race with a Republican and Obama might be a far more "interesting" battle.

That is, if the "bipartisan" efforts with a non-negotiable right continue and yield us nothing over the next few years... If Obama starts listening to and works more for his base though in the future, the liklihood of this happening becomes a lot less.

Not just because he ran the party so well, but the beginning of the end for Reagan/Bush-ism started with Dr. Dean's run for President. His initial success against Republican-lite in the Democratic party woke everyone up to the fact that the people were as mad as hell and weren't going to take it any longer.

10. I can't say what relief it is to see that Oklahoma now leans Democratic.
With nut jobs like Coburn and Inhofe, perhaps leaning Democratic will finally rid us of those two parasites. They've sucked the public t*t for too long, it's past time for both of them to go. Coburn is up for re-election this round, too. Hope he gets sent packing.

54. Don't get excited.
The majority of people in Oklahoma are registered as Democrats. BUT and it's a big BUT, the people of Oklahoma solidly vote Republican in national elections. The chances of Coburn being sent packing are very very slim.

How Oklahoma has voted in past national elections: http://www.270towin.com/states/Oklahoma

Registered Republican numbers increased in Oklahoma: http://freeinternetpress.com/story.php?sid=17858

In six states, including Iowa, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, the Democratic piece of the registration pie grew more than three percentage points, while the Republican share declined. In only three states - Kentucky, Louisiana and Oklahoma - did Republican registration rise while Democratic registration fell, but the Republican increase was less than a percentage point in Kentucky and Oklahoma. Louisiana was the only state to register a gain of more than one percentage point for Republicans as Democratic numbers declined.

I tried to get exact numbers as far as registered Republicans and registered Democrats, but couldn't find exact numbers.

I wish it were true that Oklahoma is swinging toward the blue, but I live here and I know that article is wrong!

They polled who you identified with and who you approved, not just how you were registered. The polls don't give you room to explain what you are saying. That's the problem. You have to choose between two alternatives.

and has been for a long time. There are more registered dems in this state and have been for as long as most can remember. The problem is, about half of those tend to vote repub in presidential and congressional elections. Oklahoma dems are overrun by blue dogs and DINOs. While I know this is the case in OK, the state were every county went for McCain, I suspect from looking at the map at least some of the same phenomena is going on in Tennessee and Georgia.

a lot of those Southern "Democrats" are dixiecrats who vote Republican on a national level, especially at the presidential level. So the map is extremely misleading. The national democrats are much more liberal than these dixiecrats, so a mainstream national Democrat will have little chance in a lot of those southern states, other than VA, FL and NC.

I got Repukes representing me all over. Governor, two senators, U.S. Rep.

However, my State Rep is a Democrat --- whoopee

96. I don't believe that one.
The only way I see Texas as competitive is if they only polled people in Austin. Most people where I live are clueless.

51. Daaaamn, I'd love for that to be similar to the '12 map
but that's certainly a long ways away.

If unemployment falls and we can get a decent health care package passed, we'll be good for 2010 and beyond. Stupid conservative Dems need to get with it. The lesson to be learned is that conservative economic policies are a failure and people may be starting to realize that. Sucking up to the powerful and wealthy elite is a losing strategy.

55. Then why is 90% of what I hear in the media the Republican view?
I rarely hear radio or news supporting Obama's plans.
Just tearing them down.

(Other than the few Democratically targeted specific shows)

57. For a couple reasons, probably
1. Controversy drives up ratings, they are in it for the money, and that's how they make it.
2. Republican views are good for corporate, and our news media is controlled by corporate.

70. Oh, please, let this stand
Somehow, reality has to smack these idiot Republicans between the eyes. Until a few Republicans start acting like rational human beings, we can't get anywhere. We can't pass everything as a budget reconcilliation, and that's the only way to get anything of consequence through the Senate.

82. The Republicans made a big mistake in the way they picked on Sotomayor.
They kept repeating that she had claimed to be a wise Latino woman. And then people saw her and guess what? She looked like a wise Latino woman. She talked like a wise Latino woman. And everybody really liked her. She seems down-to-earth and warm-hearted -- a far cry from the know-it-all, arrogant Scalia and the pale, faceless Roberts (nice enough guy but not much personality and certainly not down-to-earth) and the unknowns that sit with them on the Court. So, the Republicans really hurt themselves there. Americans have shown over and over that most of them really don't judge people by the color of their skin any more. We just know each other too well to fall for hate propaganda based on race and ethnicity.

93. So right
They are not only racist and sexist, they are stupid as well. They could have simply focused on some made-up "liberal" accusations, on abortion, or gay marriage or any other of the hot button issues, but they just haaaaaaaaaaaad to stray into the ethnicity waters, by harping on that one quote she made. They just can't resist the low hanging fruit. LOL

100. Figures......
You know, I realized that Republicans are the ones who play the race card, over and over. They accuse liberals of doing it, but that is not the case. Republicans are the biggest race baiters and hypocrites.

92. look at the demographics. As Oklahoma is less white it is also
less "red", The Native American and Latino voting blocks are blue and growing. Democrats increased their majorities in the Tennessee state house in 2008. The lower house alreasy had a strong D majority but before the 2008 election the upper house was essentially tied. Although you may consider many Tennessee Democrats "Blue Dogs" they are much more likely to identify as Yellow dogs.

101. I've said for a while now that Texas is going to slowly transition
over to being a blue state. Not quickly, mind you, but it is happening. We're gaining ground. Urban areas, of course, but some of the suburbs are starting to go that direction (especially the more blue collar and diverse burbs, of course). The valley, yeah. So we need to spread into the rural areas. And Ft. Worth.
