Cornyn worried White House collecting personal data
@ 1:30 pm by Eric Zimmermann

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) is worried that the White House will use a new media outreach program to collect the personal data of its political opponents.

Yesterday, the White House asked supporters to forward "fishy" claims or rumors about the President's healthcare plan to a White House email address as a way to respond to "disinformation."

Cornyn says this practice would let the White House collect personal information about people who oppose the President.

"By requesting citizens send 'fishy' emails to the White House, it is inevitable that the names, email, addresses, IP addresses and private speech of U.S. citizens will be reported to the White House," Cornyn wrote in a letter to Obama. "You should not be surprised that these actions taken by your White House staff raise the specter of a data collection program."

Cornyn asked Obama to cease the program immediately, or at the very least explain what the White House would do with the information it collects.

"I am not aware of any precedent for a President asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure speech that is deemed 'fishy' or otherwise inimical to the White House's political interests," Cornyn said.

Wasnt that a Republican motto when Bush was wiretapping everyone?

2. Our Congressman Neil Abercrombie held a town meeting on Monday, and I heard this meme.
I heard (on DU!) that there may be disruptors coming. The only one I had was a small semi loony lady who was similarly very worried about govt access online to her info. She agreed that she felt that the medicaid site was safe, and the IRS already has her info...finally she calmed down.

It was a great meeting, and I sure wish the press had attended! Neil fired us all up.

Anyhow, this is a meme being spread by whatever wizard is behind the curtain now that Rove is gone. (He is gone, right? I hope?)

5. Privacy protections is something I worry about a lot...
In general, our country is very lazy when it comes to protecting privacy. We have non-existent data protection laws and the ones we do have are not enforced.

That said, I'm sure Cornyn voted against all the stuff requiring companies to guard data better, requiring opt-in on things, etc. He is a hypocrite.

9. Silly Republicans
They got all cocky back when they put programs like this into effect. They figured they'd always be in power and hold a permanent Republican majority.

Be careful what you wish for. It might have been a good idea to ask yourselves back then how you would feel if the Democrats were in charge.
