we didn't follow thru with reconstruction. the north abandoned the south to their previous johnny-reb ways, which they continue, in spirit, to this day.

(apologies to all the level-headed folks living in the south)

civil war is currently in half-time. I dumped a guy when I saw his screensaver scrolled the phrase: The south shall rise again.

36. Wrong.
The problem was that reconstruction was so horribly handled that it guaranteed the region would be screwed up more than it should have been.

Changes had to be made, and people brought to account. Lincoln would have handled it very differently. One reason Johnson was impeached was because he tried to follow Lincoln's policies.

It was never going to be easy. However, the way it was handled created as much hate as the war did. I'm not saying change should have been slow. However, the way it was structured, the North was going to leave eventually and chaos followed.

When you have a force that imposes the change without working to also change the dynamics that create the problem, then the force is the only thing holding it together.

Let 'em have that little corner in the middle of Mountain Time. Just leave the rest of us the frak alone to live in the 21st Century as we see fit, not according to their weird, hateful Jihadist code.

They are the American Taliban.

Even though they can obstruct, they have no agenda of their own other than keeping their cushy Washington jobs and feeding federal contracts to their corporate patrons.

Sometimes, I wish we had four or five parties in America. Not a pretense to two.

45. I live in CT and I do realize this would be ridiculous because there are plenty of Dems in red
states. In fact, there are hardly any major red states left. Many states are purple these days and could go either way.

I love New England, could never dream of leaving. Autumn in New England is beautiful and Halloween is just such a great time of year here. I love that my state is small and everything is easy and quick to get to. I love going to the more rural areas of VT and NH, its not a bad drive at all from here. But I have nothing against other states. There are bad and good people everywhere and plenty of great, loyal liberals in Texas, Arizona, etc.

I've been through Connecticut and New England on a number of occasions, and I found those visits throughly enjoyable.

And you're spot-on about the fading Red States. Irreversible population and societal trends are going to render Texas a Blue State in our lifetimes.......

33. We call that Canada, and the USA
Edited on Fri Aug-07-09 05:02 PM by JayMusgrove
Sorry, but this happened 250 years ago....the landed white folks got the USA, the rest spend another 80 years without slavery, without many black folks, except escaped slaves from the USA, with no Constitution, no elections, just English law, ...

Now those poor folks in Canada have,

No appreciable racial prejudice,
Some of the best minds from the USA from the Vietnam era, (those that stayed and actually contributed to Canada)
lower crime, lower murder rates, strict gun laws
NATIONAL MEDICAL INSURANCE whree ALL SERVICES ARE FREE
Competitive private health insurance companies, that serve the rich,
Lower costs for medications from A to Z
lots of open land,
competitive international currency, valued over the US's
one of the best export markets for oil ... sending more barrels to the USA than any other nation does

Look all this up...

We gave the British government the chance to make Canada into an independent nation, while America suffered through almost 100 years of slavery, civil war, reconstruction, before the USA became able to make it's way to the most promising, most rich, most productive nation in the world, in the 18090's...while Canada, a new nation, still looked like a British protectorate, but with gold, oil, fish, lumber, other minerals, and great resources.

If you haven't lived in Canada for a year, haven't learned how Canada is about what you would want for a "liberal" USA, you don't know how the USA keeps shooting herself in the foot!!!!!

Heck, even gay people can marry in Canada, and nobody bats an eyelash.

The United States has plenty of natural beauty and places I want to visit (the Grand Canyon being one) that happen to be in red states. They should be kicked out so the rest of us normal folks can enjoy the US. Of course, that could never happen and what legal reasons could we give for kicking them out but its a dream of mine...

59. Based on what I've heard/seen them say over the years, here's where I would send them
someplace where the air and water are filthy. They have never seemed to give a shit about the environment. They are also rather nasty about us "tree huggers", so they get to live in a place where they don't have to worry about trees...or endangered species of plants or animals that might end up taking away from THEIR use of the land/earth.

They don't believe in population control...think the earth can support unlimited numbers of humans forever...so wherever they go, it's got to be crowded...just the way they like it, apparently. Maybe they can build themselves tiny little cubicle apartments on top of each other...row upon row upon row of apartments, piled high into the sky. No birth control because, well, that's BAD.

Health care only to those who "deserve" it.

Let 'em have all the guns and other weapons they like (not that I'm against guns...it's just that they should not be afraid someone is going to take their guns away from them). Actually this works in pretty well with the no birth control thing...new babies get born like weeds and the adults kill each other off. Maybe they can find a "balance" in the population. If not...who cares? They don't.

Let them eke out their livings using whatever resources they can find amongst themselves. No asking for help from anyone else. Self-sufficiency...isn't that their motto?

Wow...sounds like great fun...I'm sure they'll all be very happy together.
