Went to Hannibal, MO. Mark Twain would be so ashamed - picture

This car belongs to one of the people working at the river boat cruise. I am thinking of sending an email to the Hannibal Visitors Bureau. Tourism is down and the town is obviously suffering in this economy. Parking this car at the entrance to the cruise can't be helpful, eh?

and grew up directly across the Mississippi River in Illinois. In the 50's and early 60's both sides of the river were solidly Democratic. They have since gone to the dark side. Obama carried neither. This is NRA country.

6. That is strange
I was in Hannibal a little over a year ago and was amazed at the the number of liberal & Obama bumper stickers I saw (this being in Missouri, I'll add that they were on cars being driven by white folks - actually I noticed that there didn't seem to be many Black people in Hannibal).

I wonder if the wingnuts just knew they were beaten last year and went underground (pardon the expression) for a while?

That said, I really don't think it's right to complain to someone's employer about their bumper stickers. As obnoxious as the owner of this vehicle might be, he or she has a right to have those stickers on their car. Forcing the person to remove them would only reenforce their opinion of "libruls". We'd all have fits if we heard about someone complaining to the visitors bureau about a car with anti-Bush stickers on it.

10. Top Ten Conserative Idiots
10 Phil Geddes

And finally, if you look up "Bushbot Assmunch" in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of Phil Geddes, owner of cellulose insulation company Enviromate in Moulton, AL.

<snip>

he fired one of his workers last week because she had a Kerry bumper sticker on her car. The fired employee, Lynne Gobbell, said, "We were going back to work from break, and my manager told me that Phil said to remove the sticker off my car or I was fired. I told him that Phil couldn't tell me who to vote for. He said, 'Go tell him.'" So Gobbell went to Geddes's office. "Phil and another man who works there were there. I asked him if he said to remove the sticker and he said, 'Yes, I did.' I told him he couldn't tell me who to vote for. When I told him that, he told me, 'I own this place.' I told him he still couldn't tell me who to vote for." Shortly afterwards, Gobbell's manager came to tell her she was fired, saying of Geddes, "You could either work for him or John Kerry."

and if people with bumper stickers insist on parking in the spots that everyone else is allowed to park in, THEN they get fired?

I don't understand what action you are asking the employer to take against an employee with bumper stickers.

I'm also not clear on whether you'd want action taken against any employee parking in public with a political bumper sticker, or just the ones with republican stickers. If the car had a couple of Obama stickers, how would you be reacting now?

when they have a parking lot that customers pull into. Every retail operation I've worked at required me to park in a generally unused or unseen portion of the lot. Whatever tangent you're on really makes no sense whatsoever.

44. I've seen a lot of companies that had a designated area
for all employees to park, so that customers have the most convenient parking spots.

I've never run into an employer who allowed employees without stickers to park anywhere - while restricting employees with bumper stickers to an unseen back lot as the OP is requesting.

Are you claiming you've seen a lot of employers enact that policy?

think that merely saying "fail" cuts short all discussion and substitutes for some kind of substantive rejoinder. If you haven't got anything intelligent to say, or if you can't refute my argument with a reasoned counter-argument, don't come at me with your whiny, pissy, candy-ass little "fail". Either tell me why it's a fail, or shut up.

I suspect Mr. Twain would have been appalled, as well...only I think he would have been more appalled at you, for thinking someone should suffer some kind of consequence for having, and stating, an opinion you strongly disagree with. He was a principled man that way.

What on earth is stuck to this person's car that has you so unhinged? There's nothing racist, no incitement to violence. The stickers would lead me to believe that the owner of this vehicle is probably a combo platter of batshit crazy and irredeemably stupid; however, it's not illegal to be stupid. To you, this person's whole crime is that he or she doesn't like Obama. Don't like it? Tough shit. They have as much right to their opinions, and the expression of them, as you have to yours or I to mine.

28. I'm sorry, but are you serious?
This guy has a right to put whatever bumper stickers he wants on his car. And if he's parked in his designated spot, he has a right to park it there. Just because we don't like what the bumper stickers say, doesn't mean we should be calling the Visitor's Bureau and complaining.

I mean, seriously, don't all of us have more important things to think about than a few partisan slogans plastered to the back of some stranger's car?

29. It wasn't HER designanted spot
It was a public parking lot and she took the spot closest to the door.

When I worked for KMart in high school, we were told to park on the fringe of the lot and save the closest sopts for the customers. To park this car in that spot and with all those bumper stickers is just not a way to attract customers. This has nothing to do with her free speech rights. She is an employee at this venue. Not a tourist. An employee.

30. I don't care if she's an employee or a tourist
If it's a public parking lot, and she has permission to park there, then she should be allowed to park there.

Look, I understand the passion this kind of stuff stirs inside us, but if someone wants to ride on a river cruise, a few bumper stickers is not going scare them away. The argument that it will just strikes me as an excuse to rail against someone whose views we disagree with.

Isn't it just easier for us to walk by the car, shake our heads in disgust, then get on with our day? Do we really need to make a bigger issue of this and give this woman's idiocy more attention than it deserves?

I mean, if it's that important to you, plaster your own car full of pro-Obama bumperstickers and park next to her.

Crisis averted.

My friend's daughter was kicked out of her high school for sitting next to a girl wearing a pro Kerry shirt when Bush came there to speak. On a school day.

I am sick of the double standard. No, an employee needs to leave her politics at home. Or at least leave the high profile spots for someone who needs to park close to the venue. That's simple common courtesy.

I did call. I told the woman who answered that while I respect this employee's free speech rights and I also have bumper stickers on my car, I felt it was not a good idea to show such hatred for the president in such a highly visible spot. Perhaps she should park in the back of the lot and tourists who are choosing where to spend their money won't be distracted by extreme political views while on vacation.

What's the difference? That's right, there is none. It's freedom of speech either way, and anybody getting worked up about it needs to get a life. When I drove that car and got the finger from passing rednecks, I would just give it right back.

You let the owner of that car get to you, enough to take a picture and make a post about it. That means you lost. Personally I wouldn't have given him/her that satisfaction.

45. Two questions:
#1 How do you know that this is an employee's car? You also seem to have the inside information, even though you were a tourist and hence had traveled from afar, that this was not her designated spot.

#2 Would you want the freeper/teabagger/birther set to target a progressive with bumper stickers or signs in their car? I think if that story showed up on DU we would all be rightfully outraged.

If she ranted and raved or lectured or even shared her political belief verbally with tourists while she was working, then it would be something you could complain about.

Free speech. We all have that right. And I could not support you going after this woman for exercising hers.

And frankly, if someone could be so easily convinced to change their mind from a few pieces of sticky paper plastered on a car window, I'm not quite sure that I would mind losing them.
