Sen. Martinez (R-FL) is resigning his seat
(per CNN)

Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Florida, will announce that he is resigning his seat, three Republican sources have told CNN.

Earlier this year, Martinez said he would not run for re-election in 2010. Under Florida law covering a Senate resignation, Republican Gov. Charlie Crist will get to appoint a successor until the next general election. Crist himself is running for that seat.

2. I am hoping that maybe he is disgusted with the "antics" of
the GOP and the way they acted toward Associate Justice Sonya Sotomayor.

9. Because he's Governor and he still has to win nextyear
People don't like it when their Governor just bolts out of the blue.

13. The article says he is - was - the only Hispanic republican in the Senate.....
...and then there were none.

Not much reason to vote for them now, is there.

14. How much you want to bet that Obama is looking for a nice diplomatic spot
to put him in and give the Republicans a major black eye in the Hispanic community.

16. I think that might be the most logical explanation
He had already announced he wasn't going to seek another term. Perhaps something like a special envoy to Cuba, assuming we continue to take baby steps toward reopening ties.

This might put Crist in an interesting position. He has to appoint someone to fill out the term; he wants the seat himself; it has been reported already that he is unlikely to name himself; so he has to find a place holder with no desire to keep the seat. If that is true, the appointee will be an even lamer duck than Martinez.

17. and ironically that 'place holder' could deal himself into history by

negotiating with Obama on sensitive legislation needing a 60th vote.
