1. Fashion remarks
I love it that we have Sonia on the Supreme Court. I just wanted to point out how she is wearing dark hosiery. Does anyone do that? Particularly in August? She dresses VERY conservatively. I am an attorney but stepping out of the profession. Seeing how she is dressed reminds me of how rigid and unchanging the world of law is.

2. i kind of like the words "rigid" and "unchanging" when accompanied by "law"
I don't want rigid and unchanging politicians or bosses, etc. But much like gravity, thermodynamics and other natural law, I like the idea of much of our law being based on precedent not easily overturned or radically altered.

But I find your comments on her choice of attire to be enlightening. I was thinking how great she looks compared with the M&M colors she was sporting at the confirmation hearings.

5. What strikes me as interesting is the heels.
Especially considering her recent ankle injury. I sprained my ankle pretty badly a couple of years back and it was about six months before I could walk in heels (low heels at that) without pain.

So, my guess is, a person is only sworn into the US Supreme Court once in a lifetime. Dark clothing tends to make you appear slimmer. Since she was aware photos were going to be taken, she was probably thinking about overall effect, not 'is dark hosiery appropriate in August?'.

Not to mention, dark hosiery will go well with the black robe of office.

Besides, would anyone make a fashion comment if a man were to be sworn into office in August wearing black trousers?

8. Why I made a fashion comment
As I mentioned, I am an attorney but have decided to step away from it after practicing for 25 years. I now wear colors and styles I never wore while practicing. Seeing Sonia reminded me of how rigidly conservative the legal profession is.
So for me, my fashion comment was based on a feeling of relief, so glad I don't have to dress like that anymore. And yes, I would not have commented on what a man wore, unless he had dressed differently from the usual suits in the usual colors.

9. Oh, ok.
Well, if the next male US Supreme Court justice is sworn in wearing a baby blue power leisure suit, I don't think you'll be the only one making fashion statements.

As for the colors, I really never noticed it. I like dark colors, so I tend to wear them myself. I suppose the same 'conservative uniform' is as prevalent in business as law. Not having to deal with either of those environments, I never really noticed. Like I said, I wear dark colors because I prefer them. When I see others wear dark colors I just assume that is their preference as well.

17. Stepped away too. Threw away all the heels, nylons and bras and suits.
Ahhhhhhh! Sonia, you'll get the black gown and you can wear your PJ's under that!

6. I didn't even notice the dark hosiery,
just how nice she looks without her cast. Was it off at the confirmation hearings?

I personally would like to see the Supreme Court adopt a Hawaiian shirts Friday once a month.

12. Funny, I was just thinking before reading your remarks that she looks particularly good
in these photos, and that the look suits her well. Also, that it seems completely appropriate to me that a SC Justice would dress conservatively as all get-out. Seems to go with the solemnity of the office.

Funny you should talk about the dress code of the legal profession. I have had to sit through some local Planning Commission and Township Supervisors meetings lately where the young women lawyers seemed to be dressed absurdly for their jobs. Tall tippy stiletto heals, very short skirts, and above all long flowing flying hair that would have been appropriate on our dear departed Farrah. They seem to think they are doing lawyer role-play for some sort of latter-day Playboy Club. Of course this is out in the burbs, not where the high-powered women are working. But still.

Wishing you all the best in your next steps!

20. Just sat through a hearing with a member of our County Counsel present & was taken aback...
... by the strappy stiletto heels, the kind my hip younger sister calls "fuck me" shoes. Okay, so this was only a Civil Service hearing and not a courtroom, and it's Santa Barbara and not Los Angeles, but still -- 4 inch stilettos?

13. A word about dark hosiery and NYC.....
You would find few women in NYC legal circles who would wear anything but. Maybe a nude or a gray on occasion, but the hosiery is generally dark.

Now in DC, you still have a particular class of woman who thinks that white stockings are appropriate for grown women, but they are mostly republicans....
