Arlo Guthrie A Registered repuglican?
He's on CNN. Won't say if he voted for mccane or not. He's still anti-war, etc. I don't get it.

2. Arlo keeps about as good company as a person can possibly keep.
I'm thinking he's admirably aligned with all the progressive issues out there.

"Go to sleep, you weary hobo..." etc.

Plus he reads THOR comic books.

3. My conservative father was once a liberal and voted for Jimmy Carter
Who knows what happens to these people who switch their beliefs around so easily. Disgust with Bush I can understand for conservatives to vote for Obama but the reverse...

4. he elaborates a bit here
I appreciate what he says but think he is fighting something more than the desire to change from within. Then again, well, Alice's Restaurant was a long time ago and I was never too impressed when I saw him live so it doesn't surprise me that he seems a tad out of balance on this.

There’s controversy surrounding just about everything going on these days. And although I think discussing difficult subjects is good for the soul, I constantly have to remind myself that it ain’t all there is.

For example, about 5 or 6 years ago I left the Democratic Party and joined the Republican Party. I did so because I believed that my voice (and others like mine) needed to be heard where it would be most useful. Frankly, I still don’t believe there’s a whole lot of difference between the two. But, a healthy democracy needs a loyal and healthy opposition. Without it we run the risk of a march toward totalitarianism that would be difficult to halt.

At the time the Republicans were in power everywhere and they were seemingly taken over by ideas that ran counter to traditional Republican positions. They used to be for less big government intrusion into our lives. To me that’s usually always a good idea.

So what was up with interfering in matters of who can marry who? That’s a big invasion into personal freedoms and liberties. Those who try to control our personal lives are not only not for traditional Republican values, they’re not even really for American values. The way I view it, the state has no business in the house let alone the bedroom. The way I would resolve the current controversy would be to insure that secular marriage be open to anyone. And that religious marriage not be infringed upon by the state – to marry or not as their traditions permit. Both religious and secular marriages would be acknowledged as it is now. That, to me, should be the Republican position.

5. i have liberal members in my family who are registered republican --
they vote in the primaries for A} the worst candidate possible or B} the best candidate depending on circumstances.

but other than that -- i'm just not sure i buy the argument regarding 'government intrusion' into our lives.
as a gay man -- the citizenry seems and has seemed my whole life to be far more willing to impose itself on my life than government.

it's why i HATED growing up in peoria.

7. Five or six years ago?

In 2003 or 2004?

I'm sorry, but this makes no sense. As to being a needed voice in the party in power, that assumes they were listening. In fact, they were primarying anyone who was even moderate.

What this sounds like is a libertarian who wanted the tax cuts made permanent, with a bit of Nader "the two parties are the same" nonsense. I love his records, but I suspect as he has aged he moved to the right. His dad would not have done so.

As to gay rights, one of 2004 candidate's had a 100% record and was saying he would ask for legislation to give equal federal rights to any state sanctioned union. Hint - it was not the Republican and all the anti-gay bashing resolutions were pushed by Bush/Cheney.
