You are referring to the predominantly southern part of the Democratic Party...a legacy of the confederacy before they were wooed by the Republican Party...

It was 60 years ago (ok 61) that Hubert Humphrey made his famous speech at the Democratic convention that drove Strom Thurmond and the Dixicrats from that convention...

We had the rise of Adlai Stevenson, Hubert Humphrey, the Kennedy's etc.

7. That's not entirely true.
They were "mainstream" in the south. They were reluctantly tolerated in the north in order to win national elections.

2. Johnson said, signing the Civil Rights Act
would hurt Democrats for at least the next generation. Sometimes you have to do the right thing no matter the cost. Like Health Care Reform.
