Please join my Whole Foods guerilla action initiative!!
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 10:39 AM by frazzled
I just discovered that Whole Foods has "forums" on its Web site ( http://wholefoodsmarket.com/forums ).

So here's what I surreptitiously posted there just now, hidden in the "Favorite Recipe Swap" forum. To lengthen the amount of time before they kick me off, I decided to offer a real-sounding recipe for edamame salad--but what I actually outline in my post is the "recipe for disaster" that Whole Foods CEO John Mackey offered in his right-wing op-ed on "Obama Care." Please add your comments to my post--using innocuous post responses like "Sounds great!" or "I'll try that one!" Or post your own "recipe"!

Delicious Edamame Salad recipe

I have a delicious recipe for a cold edamame salad, especially perfect for picnics, but the recipe I am more interested in sharing today is ...

The recipe for disaster that Whole Foods co-founder and CEO John Mackey wrote in yesterday's Wall Street Journal, titled "The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare." Read for yourself, the right-wing talking points Mackey offers against "socialized" medicine and for pro-insurance-industry canards. (That's duck, in French!)

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052970204251404574342170072865070.html

This is why I and all my friends and colleagues will, alas, no longer be shopping at Whole Foods. You may want to consider the same course of action.

I didn't realize Whole Foods was run by a Teabagging Deather.
I'm boycotting them from now on. Thanks!

2. Wow. I don't shop there anyway
and now I'm really glad I never got sucked into what I always figured was just another marketing scheme.

4. Co-worker brought items from Whole foods for brunch
I took ALL OF IT BACK, told manager to tell the owner I don't have to pay to be insulted, I can get it for free. BTW, on my way out told a few (about 25) what the dumbazz CEO said, about 15 but down their items and left the store....the manager told me I couldn't do that, just informed him I was exercising my free speech too.

The owner of our company just canceled our corporate account this morning, so there goes $5,000 each month (he promotes healthy living so provides healthy breakfast & snacks ea. day) so we are getting together a group to make arrangements with the Farmers Mkt to deliver fresh items everyday.

6. I am going to talk to the WF manager today, too
Actually, there are 3 different WFs that we shop at, depending on where our errands in the city take us. I will speak to the manager at each store.

Frankly, if John Mackey had published his op-ed as a private citizen, I would not be taking this action. But he did it in the name of Whole Foods, explicitly. There are consequences to that: he has made it the official Whole Foods position. And I officially reject it.

I have emailed WF and told them I will not shop there any longer. I applaud this thread and will send it to all my friends and family.

12. Same here: I wrote...
What a load of right-wing clap Mr. Mackey has foisted on us. I always thought Whole Foods was a good guy. I guess I was mistaken after perusing his verbal regurgitation of GOP crap called The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare in the WSJ.

No more WF for me! What an asshole you have for a CEO.

8. Get some UFCW literature and leave it around the WF
I used to do that when I was working at Kroger's - grab some pamphlets and make a late-night run to Wal-Mart to leave them in places where employees would see them.

10. I heard the CEO guy being interviewed on NPR awhile back and I could tell he was
not a progressive Dem for sure, but wasn't sure exactly what his deal was. Now I know. I'm too poor to afford Whole Foods price gouging but I appreciate the info and will pass it on to my friends. :hi:

11. Damn. WF is one of the few places
in NYC where I can get a good selection of vegetarian and organic products without being price-gouged.

I spend a lot of money there, and I don't know of any good alternatives.

30. Thanks! I do go there for certain things.
Unfortunately, they are not quite a full-service supermarket.

There are other options, like farmers' markets and food co-ops. They just take a lot more effort and planning than just running to the grocery store.

13. For those of you near one, I 'discovered' Earth Fare last week.
What a great store. Based in Asheville, NC, they have stores in: Athens, Augusta, (GA), Asheville, Boone, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, (NC), Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, Rock Hill (SC) and Johnson City and Knoxville, (TN)

Wide aisles, not cramped, great selections. I don't know about their politics but Asheville's home of the WNC liberals!

17. But it's not about John Mackey himself: he has made this the "Whole Foods" position
on health care. As I said above, I've been aware of Mackey's oddball libertarian predilections for years. I don't care what he thinks personally, and it never stopped me from shopping there (though the prices limit the kinds of things I will buy there.)

In the WSJ article, however, he is saying this is the "Whole Foods" solution to health care, which is no solution at all. A grocery chain shouldn't be sticking its nose in public policy debate. Thus my decision not to patronize it any more.

26. I figured they would ... but not while I was sitting in the dentist's chair!
That hurts, man ... as if I was not in enough discomfort to begin with. Oh well, we can all pick up the cudgel tomorrow.

The truth about Whole Foods' position has to spread virally. I hope Keith and Rachel talk about it.

20. Oh no, I love Whole Foods
I guess I'm going to have to go to Trader Joe's. They don't have as big of a selection as Whole Foods but I can't shop there now.

It's kind of dumb for him to do this. I'm sure that most of his customers are liberals.

21. Yup, Yup, Took the list off the fridge-
Luckily, we have Puget Consumers Co-op here in Seattle for our natural foods needs, but I still found myself in Whole Foods once a week just poking around. No more. How strange is it that a businessman would work to alienate his base? Any further contact information to notify them directly would be greatly appreciated.

24. P.S.
Just called my local store, spoke to the manager, told her that Whole Foods has lost my business, and why. Told her that progressives put her store on the map. Gave her the $ figure from my last frivolous romp, and asked her to pass the message along up the chain. She seemed bewildered, but promised to do that.

29. Makes me feel that much more thankful I shop at New Seasons in Oregon. Whole Foods sued them...
Edited on Thu Aug-13-09 03:06 PM by cascadiance
as a part of their legal battles with the FTC to swallow up Wild Oats earlier. They are swallow up so many other independent grocery firms around the country, really defeating the whole sense of "buy local", etc. that the alternative food chains provide. And to hear such a right wing set of comments from this guy to me is over the top. If you're in Oregon, go to New Seasons! I also like Trader Joes too, but New Seasons has larger stores with greater selections to complement shopping at TJ's...
