President Barack Obama and his family during a tour of the Grand Canyon in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.

Pausing to take in the panorama, which is a dramatic view of a red rock buttte and the brown water of the Colorado River, POTUS tells his family that, "The last time I was here is when I was 11 years old."

Ranger Kraynak: "Does it look the same?"
POTUS: "It does."
FLOTUS, smiling: "He's not that old!"

3. Those lucky, lucky girls!
Yellowstone one day, the Grand Canyon the next... It doesn't get much better than that! Wish I was there, too.

Thanks for the photos, Jackeens. I always enjoy them

4. That sort of reminds me of some European tourists who plan
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 03:02 PM by Arugula Latte
to see New York City one day, then go to Disneyworld the next, then the Grand Canyon, not realizing the distances between them. But if you're the prez, you can make it work. :)

6. Don't care
I love this President, and the Grand Canyon. But he needs to get the Democrats on board with health care reform.

13. I'm so glad he took the girls to the GC...
I took my grandchildren there over Memorial Day weekend this year--we booked the GC Railway package and I wish it would have been a longer stay. No pictures do the Grand Canyon justice, IMO--you have to be there in person to take it in. It is majestic.

standing at the bottom of the Canyon with one of those blow up thingies they throw down when they think someone's gonna jump from a building lol.

And on a related note, Sash decided to take a little excursion....

After a moment, Sasha broke from the family and took a seat on a rock to rest and drink water.

FLOTUS: "Sash, c'mere."
POTUS: "Whaddaya doin' all the way over there?"
FLOTUS, smiling: "She's done."

The yonger daughter, in black cap and sunglasses, rejoined the family.

18. Pictures do not do it justice
Been there many times. Used to live just 80 miles from the South Rim, and worked at the company HQ for the Grand Canyon Railway in Flagstaff.

Seeing it at sunset is sublime.

19. The Grand Canyon is maybe the most awe inspiring thing I ever saw
I stopped on my way from my home in Philadelphia to my home in LA. It was glorious, but I have to confess the beauty of NM--far more quotidian, in its way, and less aggressive--made me even more weak.

20. Based on Picture #4
I predict Malia will be as tall as her dad by Christmas!

Great photos, but the heights - I'd have to look straight out, now down. Toes tingling.

23. I bet he feels being President isn't so big a deal
It tends to cause awe inspired humbleness. The Grand Canyon is an ego bubble popper. Too bad Bush never went there. He could have used a little vanity adjustment.
