45 Senators For The Public Option?

45 Senators For The Public Option?

Yesterday I learned that Senators Cantwell, Snowe, Dorgan, Reid and Udall had all announced their support in recent days and weeks for a public option. Those five and Al Franken get added to the 37 that Dr. Howard Dean has listed as public option supporters on his whip site Stand With Dr Dean Dot Com. The 44th on the list is Kay Hagan who came out in favor of the public option a few weeks ago.

Here are the fifteen Senators who have not confirmed to voting yes or no for a public option: Baucus, Bayh, Begich, Bennet, Byrd, Carper, Conrad, Feinstein, Lincoln, Nelson (FL), Nelson (NE), Pryor, Tester, Warner and Wyden.

What do we know about these fifteen?

<...>

Here are the contact numbers for those Dems who have yet to state strong public opposition or support for the public option.

On edit, when you consider that at least 40 Senators have stated that they are supporting a public option, it's ludicrous for Conrad to claim they don't have the votes.

1. That's good news

We only need five more to pass health care through the Reconciliation Act, I think it's called. I would think there are easily 5 people in that list who would be at least somewhat receptive: Wyden, Tester, Pryor, Feinstein, Byrd, and Begich for example. Also, even though Lieberman has said he would not support a public option, I don't think he should be ruled out. He's generally been good on civil rights type issues, and I think maybe Obama could sway him, especially by supporting his next Senate bid.

2. Here is Feinstein's reponse to my letter grilling her on a Public Option
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 03:37 PM by Aramchek
Thank you for contacting me regarding health care reform and providing a public health care option. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond.

I believe that there is much room for improvement in our nation's healthcare system. However, I believe that health care reform should not increase the federal deficit. I am deeply concerned about the large number of individuals and families in our country who do not have access to quality healthcare. This is a problem that touches every community and must be addressed at many different levels, including the Federal, State and local government. This problem is especially acute in California, where nearly 7 million people are uninsured.

The escalating cost of some premiums continues to make obtaining health insurance difficult, if not impossible, for many Americans. I am working hard to remove existing barriers to health care so that all Americans have access to the services they require.

One of the many proposals being considered to reform our system is to create a health care plan that is publically operated. Please know that I am reviewing all health care reform options and I will keep your comments in mind as the Senate continues to work to improve health care for all Americans.

Again, thank you for writing. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841. Best regards.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

I really can't believe this lady is from California.

Can we please get a decent primary challenger for her in 2012?!?

15. Penny wise, pound foolish
I'm tired of these dumb ass answers about adding to the federal deficit from buffoons who never once questioned or stood up to Bush's spending like a drunken sailor.

Why is it always wrong to spend money on Americans, but totally righteous to piss away money on no bid contracts, completely unnecessary failed military strategies, and astronomically expensive and unnecessary toys for defense?

Stop the facade Dianne. Your problem is that it doesn't benefit you. You continue to vote for outrageous defense spending, which also adds to the deficit, without question.

I never thought of him as a weak Dem before this healthcare thing. Last I heard his office was dancing around it with statements like "the senator will support the public option if its what the senate wants"

I think Warner and Bayh will if pushed by the President. I really don't know about the rest of them. I didn't realize there were so many moderate Democrats.

24. I disagree about Bayh, but agree on Warner.
I also think we'll get Byrd and Bennet--especially if Bennet wants to win his seat in CO. He'll need Obama's support and a yes vote for the PO is the best way for him to get it.

12. Response from Bill Nelson re single payer or at least a public option
Thank you for contacting me regarding the health care reform process. Anyone who has battled a major illness knows the system is broken, and we can no longer wait to fix it.

The health care industry is massive and complex, and there are a range of ideas on the table for reforming it. Chief among our aims must be to rein in the out-of-control costs of care. This means a new emphasis on wellness and prevention, a recommitment to researching innovative, more effective treatments for diseases, and additional efforts to lower the cost of prescription drugs. I introduced the Medicare Prescription Drug Gap Reduction Act (S.266) to reduce the large gap known as the "doughnut hole" that occurs when Part D beneficiaries who have paid pay $2,700 in prescription expenses receive no further benefit until they have racked up a total of $4,350 in out-of-pocket expenses, despite the fact that they never stop paying premiums.

Equally important is the issue of the uninsured. Nearly 50 million Americans lack adequate health insurance, and that is unacceptable. I am working toward reforms that would make health insurance available to all Americans through an insurance exchange and would provide subsidies to those who cannot afford coverage. I also believe that Americans should never be denied health insurance or charged exorbitant fees because of a pre-existing condition.

Finally, we must ensure that there are enough health care providers in America and that they are adequately reimbursed by Medicare and Medicaid so they can continue providing care to those most in need. I introduced S. 973, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2007, to address this growing problem. This legislation would expand the number of Medicare-supported physician residency training positions, with an emphasis on funding new primary care residency slots. The number of physician residents eligible for reimbursement has not been altered to reflect changing demand since 1996. I have also fought consistently for fair Medicare reimbursement rates.

The task before us is immense, but Americans will rise to the challenge. I will be sure to take your views into consideration as the debate progresses. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future.

Sincerely,
Senator Bill Nelson

16. Wyden, Nelson (FL), Carper, Bennett Would All Seem to Be Good Candidates to Push
I'd get Biden to lean but HARD on Carper. Wyden doesn't make sense but is apparently very close friends with OMB Director Orszag so maybe that's where pressure can come from. Get Webb to bitch-slap Mark Warner and you might have a shot there. And I think Robert Byrd would certainly want to be remembered for helping to push healthcare reform among other things...

So let's get cracking and Kent Conrad can shut the fuck up...

22. My letter to Bill Nelson (D) Florida
Senator Nelson, my understanding is you are still weighing whether or not you will support a healthcare reform bill that contains a “Public Option”. As a Florida Democrat, I urge you to get behind the public option plan. Your lack of support for such a plan will surely cost you my vote and that of many Florida Democrats and Independents. Stand up and be counted Senator Nelson.

Stand up and get on board Senator Nelson.
Stand with the Democrats who support a public option.
Stand up for the millions of Americans denied heath care by the insurance industry for pre-existing conditions.
Stand up for the American families who are living paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford health insurance.
Stand up for the American families who are one serious illness away from bankruptcy.
Stand up for the millions of Americans who if they lose their jobs, lose their health care.
Stand up for the millions of Americans who would like to start their own business, but cannot leave their current job because they will lose their health insurance.
Stand up against the health insurance industry and their co-pays, deductibles, and caps.
Stand up against the health insurance industry that award their management with million dollar bonuses.
Stand up to stop health insurance companies from getting between us and our doctors.
Stand up against the health insurance industry who incentify claim denials.
Stand up against the health insurance industry who has poured billions of dollars into lobby groups and Senators’ pockets to stop any type of healthcare insurance reform.
Stand up against the likes of Dick Armey, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity who have vilified YOUR President and his efforts to reform health care insurance.
Use some of the courage you had when you flew in the Shuttle in 1986 to stand up against the right wing crazies who would tear our country apart.
In 2005 you voted in favor of the bankruptcy "reform" bill that made it harder for individuals to rid themselves of insurmountable debt.
This year you voted against setting a limit on credit-card company usury.
That’s two strikes against you Senator Nelson, don’t let there be a third.
Stand up and be a Democrat, not just in name but in your actions.
Stand up and be counted Senator Nelson.
