President Obama is the real target of health care protesters, not policy
I just found this excellent article from the NY Daily News. Mike Lupica is saying that they could not win the election so in desperation they are trying to hijack the presidency. Excerpt follows:

The most violent opposition isn't directed at his ideas about health care reform. It is directed at him. It is about him. They couldn't make enough of a majority to beat the Harvard-educated black guy out of the White House, so they will beat him on an issue where they see him as being most vulnerable.

In the process, they'll come after him on health care the way Kenneth Starr went after Bill Clinton on oral sex in the Oval Office.
With that kind of zealotry, screaming about government programs as if Medicare isn't one. It is why so many of them, all these wild-eyed red faces in the crowd, look completely certifiable, screaming about how Obama wants to kill Grandma, as if he's suddenly turned into Jack Kevorkian.

And by the way, if Sarah Palin is involved - Palin as uninformed as ever about these so-called "death panels" - the debate just got dumber, if that's possible. No kidding. If foreign policy was a brain-buster for Palin, something as truly complex as health care will make her feel as dizzy as if she just rolled down a hill.

1. I agree, but I have a question.
Why is it that when the Republicans have the majority they behave as if they have a majority and when Democrats have the majority they still behave as if Republicans do?

My battle plan would be: STOP having town hall meetings, go back in September, rip every goddam Republican amendment from the health care bills and pass what the President wants.

And by the way, if the Blue Dogs don't like it they can go to hell.

3. And now all the meetings do...
is give the screamers more media coverage. Stop the meetings and they're invisible again. And you are right about no fight.

4. This Is Like A Rerun of The Clinton Years
It's true. It doesn't matter what Obama is passionate about. They will be against it and fight it tooth and nail. If it was trying to change food manufacturers to use real sugar vs high fructose corn syrup you would still see the idiots being bused in fearing a change in foods will lead to their guns being taken away, gov't taking away all their rights etc! Many of the protesters are shills. They have little idea of what the issues realy are. All they know is their "radio goofballs" tell them this is what to do. They are organized, bused, and given signs to protest anything and everything Obama. (oddly so many seem to have failed spelling in school!)
The Dems should have learned their lessons from the Clinton years to overcome the noise in the background,to become stronger then the other side. They should have learned the tactics of the "angry" party and beat them at their own game. They seem almost confused,at times, over the hate that now represents the other party.

10. Precisely
This is exactly what Clinton said last week in a speech shown on C-SPAN.

But the problem isn't the right wingnuts. The problem is with the DNC which simply refuses to back up Obama just like it refused to do with Clinton. The DNC is gutless. It knows fully well that Obama was elected with a mandate to create health care reform. But it will not do anything to insure that it is enacted.

Kiss health care reform goodbye. Kiss the Democratic party majority in Congress goodbye as well. We have the gutless DNC to thank for that tragedy.

5. On OUR side, too
Not just on the right.

On DU, too. It's pretty obvious. That it is allowed to continue is also why I'm not donating.

17. President is getting it from
all sides with many supporters in the middle protecting his flanks. I gotta think that the Prez and his trusted advisors knew this was coming and have prepared for it.

7. It's not just Obama.
I think they'd do the same with anybody who is not one of them -- "the chosen."

After Reagan, Bush I, the Republican takeover of Congress in 94, Bush II, and clues like "The Family" on C Street, they have apparently convinced themselves that it is their divine calling to be the boss of everything.

Their agenda has been stated quite plainly since Obama took office. They've boldly told the world they want to destroy him. They've fought the Stimulus bill all the way down to the gubernatorial level. They fight Single Payer. They're obviously pulling out all the stops in the Democratic town halls. They've deployed their front line screaming mouthpieces who screech on the airwaves about wanting Obama to fail no matter what the cost is, and they have the backing of Billions while our side has mere Millions. They whipped up the racists into a raging froth that no amount of reason can quell. They disrupt at every opportunity. They're willing to see the entire country go down rather than work with the Democrats. And they will succeed.

That's like David and Goliath. Corporations who stand to make Trillions are pouring Millions into Washington DC PER DAY. In the present Washington DC culture where money trumps everything, including Democrats how is Obama supposed to ram anything down anyone's throat? Should he just become a Unitary Executive like Bush and Cheney? Is that why we fought so hard to get him elected? Just to get all that power for ourselves? Just to take our turn and make them bend over for us now?

He's not perfect, and never was by the way, and never will be. You just think he should be while you drag him down with lack of support because he disappoints you by not acting just like them. Maybe instead of the posters in this thread whining about how disappointed you are because he isn't carrying you on his back in the race you should care enough about the future itself to fight for it on your own.

11. This is a really great post!
I'm not sure how many of those "always disappointed with Obama" posters there are in this particular thread, but DU seems overwhelmed with them as a whole.

You should consider making this an OP.

9. This is the same thing on our side. Most people complain about Obama not the policy line by line.
There are a lot of haters on this site and it has nothing to do with what he's doing or not doing.

Inadvertantly or otherwise they are making Obama look "moderate"--between those insane progressives and Right-Wing nutjobs when he is far from it.

16. Yep. No doubt about it
Regardless of what his signature initiative was, hate radio would be whipping up violent brainwashed idiots to make it into a hate-filled sideshow.

My question: Are we ever going to fight back?
