Former Gov. Dean calls public option indispensable

Former Gov. Dean calls public option indispensable

By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Former Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean, a leading figure in the liberal wing of his party, said Monday he doubts there can be meaningful health care reform without a direct government role.

Dean urged the Obama administration to stand by statements made early on in the debate in which it steadfastly insisted that such a public option was indispensable to genuine change, saying that Medicare and the Veterans Administration are "two very good programs that have been around for a long time."

<...>

He called a direct government role "the entirety of health care reform. It isn't the entirety of insurance reform ... We shouldn't spend $60 billion a year subsidizing the insurance industry."

Dean also said he doesn't foresee any Republican support for a public option. "I don't think the Republicans are interested and in order to have a bipartisan bill, you've got to have both sides interested," he said.

1. I concur
I think that a public option is essential, and I urge people to write the White House and contact not just your member of Congress and your senators, but contact other people on Capitol Hill. In the end, it is up to us to call for change and press for it. Perhaps that is the only way that change has happened in this country.

3. I called my Rep and my Senators on Friday to tell them Health Care reform
without a public option was pointless.

I'm so glad Dean is on this.

2. K&R -- Sebelius need to confirm that it is INDISPENSABLE: 202-205-1424
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 10:03 AM by Faryn Balyncd

Sec. Sebelius says she just meant to say the Public Option was not the most important part, but that she and the President support a Public plan.

that statement of hers, however, is simply not enough. In fact, it is counterproductive to the extent that it implies that it might be possible to pass worthwhile "reform" without a Public Option.

She needs to clearly state, as Howard Dean has, that any plan without a Public Option only PRETENDS to be reform, and that the Public Option is INDISPENSIBLE.

Her #'s are:

202-205-1424

and 202-205-5445

and 202-690-6343

5. No public option is a deal-breaker for me
Since I have all Puke representation, I will call them up and tell them to vote NO if the public option is off the table. Since I have worn them out with my YES calls, I will be clear on my reversal of encouragement.
