Two AR-15 & More than 1 Handgun Carrier Outside Phoenix Obama Event
Video: http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/news/2009/08/video_at_least_one_man_shows_up_with_assault_rifle.php

(Late update: CNN now reports that there were two men carrying assault rifles, reportedly AR-15s, outside President Obama's event in Phoenix.)

A man was seen carrying an assault rifle and a pistol outside the VFW Convention in Phoenix where President Obama spoke today, a local newspaper reports. (Click through for a photo.)

Local police said it's legal under Arizona law, but two officers kept close by him.

"If we need to intervene, we will intervene at that time," said Detective J. Oliver.

The man, who gave his name only as "Chris", was asked why he was armed. "Because I can do it," he said. "In Arizona, I still have some freedoms."

Here's video from ArizonaCentral.com (go to about 1:30). It looks like the man giving the interview was also carrying a pistol.

1. Well that's pretty fucking dumb.
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 03:14 PM by TheWraith
If those guys had some wild-ass freeper notions in their head, they'd still never even be able shoulder those rifles before the Secret Service snipers took them out. A guy with a scary looking rifle is no match for a guy with a rifle he knows how to use.

On edit: additionally, that's a TERRIBLE weapon to use if you were going to assassinate somebody. You'd either want to use something with moderate to high power, so that you can take a long distance shot, or something like a handgun that's concealable. This is just freeper masturbation.

2. Somebody should shove that AR 15 right up his fucking loser Freeper racist ass
Just because something is "legal" doesn't mean it makes any goddamn sense. There is no logical reason for anybody to walk around with a goddamn assault rifle, under ANY circumstances, let alone when the President of the United States is nearby.

3. "racist ass"
I'm not sure what you mean by "racist ass", given that the man I saw carrying the rifle was black.

6. Nope - read the OP & other posts

Clear he was a citizen. On edit I see that you caught that.

BTW, I'm reading that Kessler book on the Secret Service - he claims that many agents would like to carry the equivalent of the AR-15 but Service is making them stick to the MP5 which uses a 9mm pistol round. They feel they are outgunned especially in case of a foreign or domestic group terrorist attack.

11. Yeah, I hadn't clicked through to the article.
Wasn't sure if the person I replied to was referencing the same guy(s) the OP was.

I admit security ops isn't my field of expertise, but I can see why protective agents would perfer something like the AR (or more likely, a Marine Corps type M4 SBR configuration) for range and power. Maybe the Secret Service higher ups are worried that if they're forced to start shooting, it's likely to be in the middle of a crowd, and they don't want to risk overpenetration?

16. Some of the agents commented that their training scenarios
have them going up against AR-15's and AK-47's which sounds like a battlefield & when they fire back with their MP-5's it's like a popgun. The agents are feeling outgunned.

Secret Service should've taken a lesson from the LA Bank Robbery.

Now I'm not sure how accurate the book is - this guy is certainly carrying an AR-15 type fully auto weapon.

14. Their free-dumb to have an idiotic unelected white moron in the White House?
You'll notice these goddamn fools always talk about "restoring the Constitution"? I'm sure their idea of doing so involves eliminating the 22nd Amendment (among others), and if they did that, then proved Obama was an "unamerican Kenyan Muslin" they could restore the Chimp to his rightful throne. :puke:

10. Started with one guy at one event
Now "several guys" at one event.

What do they do when a hundred armed assholes show up at a presidential event?

That's what the fuckers are building to. They're pushing it to see how far they can push it.

attitude towards the President is chilling. When the Bush was in office, you could not get within a half mile of him without an invitation, and now with Obama, we have these nimrods carrying guns.. I have never heard of such a thing.

17. I'm thinking something bad is going to happen in one of these crowds
Things can get pretty damned heated when you have two opposing sides screaming at one another. All it takes is one person armed getting unhinged or even someone in the crowd grabbing the gun.
