Liberals complain over Obama concession

Liberals complain over Obama concession

By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's weekend concession on a health care "government option" drew complaints from liberals and scarce interest from Republicans and other critics on Monday, a fresh sign of the daunting challenge in finding middle ground in an increasingly partisan political struggle.

The White House insisted there had been no shift in position, adding the president still favors a federal option for the sale of health insurance. "The bottom line is this: Nothing has changed," said a memo containing suggested answers for administration allies to use if asked about the issue.

But some supporters of health care overhaul sounded less than reassured.

"You really can't do health reform" without allowing the government to compete with private insurers, said Howard Dean, a former Democratic Party chairman. "Let's not say we're doing health reform without a public option," he added in a slap at the administration's latest move.

His remarks were echoed by lawmakers as well as AFL-CIO President John Sweeney, who said the option was the only way to force "real competition" on the insurance industry.

1. Complain? Hell no, we're livid. And it's not just "liberals." This is not a left vs. right issue
but "The American People" vs. "Large Insurance Corporations."

I hope and pray that Obama and our Democrats in Congress choose "The People" over bloated corporate profits.

2. They won't
The Dems never met a corporate dollar they didn't like. They're no different than their Rethug colleagues. No one cares about "we the people".

Where are these magnificent people to support the congress people and the president to get the juice behind health care reform.

All I am hearing and seeing is NOTHING!

10. That's 'cause you're getting sucked
into the corporatemediawhores' lies. WE as Dems should know better after they gave us 8 years of bushcheney and The War On Iraq ..which wouldn't have been with a Free Press.

6. AP floats a story to get liberals riled up and then reports on liberal anger directed toward Obama
Hilariously predictable.

12. Yes, predictable, especially the part that the leadership played...
....shitting all over the base and all. Hilarious! I'm all in stitches.

I wonder how the media got them to do that?

They didn't.

There would be nothing to report if Conrad and Sebelius didn't both boldly and in typical fashion run away from the left as fast as they could.

If you think the media conducted this out of whole cloth, then you are failing to see the very basic fact that the Democrats HAVE signaled giving up the public option. I do not trust anyone who insists on seeing events with blind spots and concocting conspiracy theories that involve the media being evil geniuses and liberals a bunch of gullible fools. Especially in blind defense of a political party that is quite ostensibly fucking up.

15. If there is no public option, then that will be very disappointing
The thing is, we don't know for sure if the public option is dead. The AP wants us to think it is, but I'm still waiting to see what happens when congress gets back into session.

They're on vacation right now.

22. If you wait until it is dead to get upset, it is too late
It is a signal that the public option will be dead if we do not make a push.

We made the push, and now the Democrats are following suit with the liberals.

This is not the AP's doing. It was a WH trial balloon that popped the second it left Sebelius' mouth. Obama got his signal, too....the signal that the left is done compromising.

19. The "concession" meme is suddenly everywhere
I just heard it on my local news. It's the top story on my web browser home page (Comcast.net). The propaganda is REALLY being catapulted right now for sure. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that we're all getting played right now. No statements put out by the administration seem to be making any difference either because a lot of people here are demanding that Obama now DEMAND a PO as a "test" of his sincerity. Of course, I wonder what happened the last time a President waved a pen and told Congress he would veto any health care reform legislation that was, in any way, less than what he asked for. Oh yeah, it failed. :eyes:

I WANT the PO but I'm not going to revolt if we get some otherwise good legislation through that helps more people attain more affordable coverage and regulates the insurance industry more tightly. People need to take a deep breath and relax before they burst a blood vessel over all of this.

16. FUCK THE MIDDLE GROUND
The middle ground is what Neville Chamberlain tried for in 1939, and that's what we're headed for if we keep appeasing the American Nazis
