If you had written 25 years ago how fucked up this country would be in 2009, you would have been ridiculed an an absolute crackpot.

2. I just saw the guy interviewed on my local news here in Phoenix.
He's not even from AZ. He admits he was here to 'exercise his right to carry weapons'. I have no doubt he was hoping to be arrested.
What an idiot!

3. Point of clarification, the incident in the news is not about "assault rifles" that are select fire
and require extensive investigation before one can legally own one.

14. The one on today looked like an AR-15 body style.
I haven't seen anything indicating that the person carrying it didn't have a license that would allow him to buy/sell/carry a full-auto rifle, or more information on what exact kind of rifle it was.

How do you know it wasn't an "assault rifle"? If it was a legally owned, full-auto capable, M-16, would that count, or do you not consider any weapon to meet that classification?

6. THis would be a deterrent, IMO
"You have the right to bring killing machines to a presidential rally. We have the right to assume that if you bring one, you intend to kill the president; there is certainly no need to have it for defense, since the only people at these meetings with weapons are

a. Secret Service, and
b. People who want to kill the president

Therefore, if your hand goes anywhere near the handle, we are going to assume you are getting ready to fire at the president, and will act accordingly.

assault rifle, he would have been roughly removed and jailed, probably convicted of a crime and imprisoned.

But with a Dem president pretty much anything is encouraged.

27. True, but if the Prez does a little campaign-style appearance,
walking among the people, shaking hands, etc., the nut cases have the same "rights" at those as they do at these things.

Again, the point is not the actual distance. The point is that allowing assault rifles at presidential events, in the hands of people who hate the president, is well and truly fucked up.

No, you can't. From the CNN article:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/08/17/obama.protest.rifle/index.html

Asked whether the individuals carrying weapons jeopardized the safety of the president, (Secret Service Agent) Donovan said, "Of course not."

The individuals would never have gotten in close proximity to the president, regardless of any state laws on openly carrying weapons, he said. A venue is considered a federal site when the Secret Service is protecting the president and weapons are not allowed on a federal site, he added.

Given our nations history of killing liberal Presidents, no one should be allowed near Obama with a gun, never mind a fucking assault rifle. And the same cops who pass around racist hate mail about our President are the ones telling us, 'There's no cause for alarm.' Fuck that! I can see where wingnuts will increasingly bring more and more guns to peaceful events until something explosive happens. We're on the verge here.

34. Did it ever occur to you gun haters that we are seeing a lot of staged events...
because they need a large public outcry to come and take the guns.
If they just outlaw guns right now...there would be riots. etc. ..so there have to be more columbine massacres and gun scares first.
So you should be EXPECTING more of these things to happen in the very near future.
You should also be paying attention and you will find that ALL of the mass shootings are in places that guns are ALREADY OUTLAWED.
You would never see a mass murder at a police station or a NRA meeting...duh.

People who have been whipped into an Obama-hating frenzy by gun nuts are the radio are being allowed to carry assault rifles within a few yards of the president. This is very, very, fucked up

And your mental calisthentics - that this is a plot to take your guns. Is so far out there as to be unrecognizable from planet Earth. Look what you wrote. Your claim is that Beck, Weiner, etc. are whipping up hatred and paranoia among their followers, so that those nut jobs will take arsenals to Obama appearances, and one of them will take a shot at Obama, and then they'll be able to take your guns. Your claim is that Beck and the rest of Hate Radio are trying to get your guns by having one of their brainwashing victims take a shot at the president.

8 years of being on DU - this one takes the prize

58. Just to clarify where I stand.....
I am NOT for anyone bringing guns to town meetings, places that the president will be at or any of our elected officials..period.
You can bet that for every wacko carrying a gun outside in plain view there are dozens packing a concealed weapon...both the wacko and the law abiding.
Therefore I do believe there needs to be a policy, just like in the wild west where guns are checked in at the door.
However, in my post I was simply trying to point out that Beck and all the other talking right wing heads ARE trying to advance the right wing agenda which I believe is a total dictatorship.
Therefore, they are instigating violence and encouraging these wackos to brings guns and act out. I also believe that the right wing is planting a lot of these instigators in order to advance their agenda.
I don't believe it is all just racism to these heads, although to many of the wackos they appeal to, it IS simply racism.
I believe it is all part of the right wing attempt to take over America and destroy our nation and the wackos that bring guns to these events and display them are trying to intimidate everyone and to spook us into giving up our guns.
I believe the right wing agenda is to disarm us as a people.

45. It may be their right but is it really necessary?
It appears to be more about posturing and intimidation. Why is a gun needed at a health care rally? What does the 'right to bear arms' have to do with health care reform?

I see it as a way to create diversion from the topic at hand and it appears to be working since everyone is talking about guns at the rally instead of health care reform.

Like their tactics or not, racial inequality was (and still is a reality) and the black panthers were fighting to change that.

The people at these health care forums are fighting against a totalitarian fantasy that they think will come true if Obama's health care plan passes even though it won't. They are not acting rationally, they are acting out of fear stirred up by Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

63. For folks younger than me:
In the 60's, black folks were murdered by cops with alarming regularity.

This was morally wrong, and a few dudes figured out that it was legal to follow cops, while carrying guns, to keep the cops in check.

Black men started carrying guns. And following cops.

This freaked the hell out of white folks, and the cops.

A lot of the black folks who stood up were murdered too.
