FLASHBACK-April 2008: Obama just can't "seal the deal"
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 07:12 PM by zulchzulu
There are plenty of people politically on the side of the road from underestimating Barack Obama.

Let's go down Memory Lane:

Obama can't close the deal

Clinton notches another do-or-die big-state win in Pennsylvania. Which is more troubling for Democrats -- her scorched-earth tactics or Obama's failure to build on his base?

It's mid-August, people. Congress is not in session. We still have ultimately five plans in congressional committees that STILL have to go through Congress with amendments that then go to the Senate with amendments and then go back to committees and then back to Congress and then the Senate again.

THERE IS NO BILL YET.

Not everything is going to be solved in this first effort at health care reform. We will not have Single Payer (unfortunately). But I am willing to wager that we will have a form of the Public Option passed and signed by President Obama by the time all this is said and done.

Or you can underestimate Obama if you want...

Addendum:

Keith Olbermann is saying that Obama should just ignore the Republicans "and put the best bill forward". Keith? Does the President make bills that Congress and the Senate pass? Am I watching ESPN?

4. I think that by the time the REAL bill is being considered, the pressure on Democrats will be...
...overwhelming.

If Democratic Senators want to go on the side of Republicans with health care reform that over 80% of Americans want, they may as well take golf lessons since they will have plenty of time on the links after they get their asses kicked in any primaries they might be in.

Blue Dog Democrats better beware... trust me.

All this nonsense with the Repig hecklers and hooligans reminds me of how so many Republicans were gleeful that the Reverend Wright issue would "destroy" Obama.

For those who doubt, I say "watch and learn".

8. In the end it will come down to whether or not they will ram it through with 51 votes

I am guessing that they will.

12. Exactly! 51 is the magic number
They will get the 51. By December (when it all will get down), Obama will make sure that the 51 votes needed will be on board.

5. Two Points...
1. Its August which is the slowest possible time for the politics shows on the MSM - so they are more than happy to stroke any whack job nut case theory about anything from soup to nuts. They need SOMETHING to talk about.

2. We have no idea what the hell is going on behind the scenes.

So lets just take a deep breath and get ready for round two shall we? If we throw in the towel now we will have no reform now or ever.

Yes we can.

6. Now that's a good diagnosis!
It's true. August is when America goes on vacation. That includes the media. As one who worked in television news (doing graphics...), August was when the second and thrid string worked while the big dogs were sipping martinis on Cape Cod.

Yes, there is a lot of shuffling and horse trading going on and the messaging is not exactly top drawer at the moment.

And, as you said, we need to get ready for Round Two and mostly not give up on Obama, who has put his neck out to try to get health care reform as a major issue.

13. You are absolutely correct. I know we will have health care reform and the RW will be eating crow.
They are so sure they smell blood in the water along with the media- just wait and see.
