Sen. Kerry has hip surgery to address chronic pain

BOSTON – Sen. John Kerry and his daughter Vanessa are sporting his-and-her crutches.

The Massachusetts Democrat had surgery last week on his right hip to address chronic pain and flexibility problems.

The surgery was performed at Massachusetts General Hospital and Kerry was discharged after five days.

"It's the accumulation of 65 years of hockey, lacrosse, skiing, marathon-running, just abuse and, frankly, a little bit of degeneration over that time," the senator said Monday in a telephone interview.

Kerry's daughter also had surgery to repair nerve damage on the bottom of her left foot. Kerry spokeswoman Brigid O'Rourke said Vanessa, a doctor and third-year resident, is getting married this fall "and wanted to be able to dance at her wedding."

The two used their crutches Monday to enter a swearing-in ceremony for Kerry's former brother-in-law, David Thorne, as the new U.S. ambassador to Italy. He is the brother of Kerry's ex-wife and Vanessa's mother, the late Julia Thorne.

14. pre-existing conditions
All this shrapnel he's been carrying around since Viet Nam, for example. Plus I'm sure an ordinary insurance company would come up with some record of old sports injuries to get out of paying the bills.

16. You mention shrapnel from Vietnam which reminds me that he is a veteran
Even if he never had become a Senator, wouldn't he be eligible for VA insurance? Kerry's own statement does not mention any war related damage, but rather all the athletic things he has done.

In addition, he is one of the few people who really would have no problem paying without insurance.

11. That is good and it is good that he has worked to extend the number of other people who have it
Kerry wrote the precursor bill to SCHIP with Kennedy and with Dodd was an original co-sponsor of the Kennedy and Hatch's bill. In addition, his wife has helped fund clinics in some poor under served areas.

Did you miss that he had an ambitious healthcare plan in 2004? A plan Edwards attacked him for in the primaries because Edwards was for a much less comprehensive plan. Why does he deserve this snark.

Not to mention, even if there was no such thing as insurance, I assume John and Teresa could still easily afford it out of pocket.

12. It's funny, I thought he would look so much different with a beard, but he doesn't.
Frankly, he looks fine with or without the beard.

microwaves flying around ain't so healthy. I don't care what they say to the contrary whenever I use wifi for too long the pains kick in at the joints and I'm way too young for all that. So I'm all wired up most times, well at least braodband wise. :)

17. I wonder if he had a hip replacement.
That's what I need if I ever get health care coverage and I've been investigating minimally invasive procedures that have you up and around in a few days (as opposed to weeks and weeks with the regular surgery). Of course, it will all be a moot point if there is no public option.
