President Obama may call on ailing Ted Kennedy

By Gayle Fee and Laura Raposa
Monday, August 17, 2009 - Updated 22h ago

Word from the Cape is that the Secret Service has been down to the Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport to prepare for a possible visit from President Obama, who may take a break
from his Martha’s Vineyard vacation to spend some time with the Bay State’s ailing U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy .

The White House and Kennedy’s office wouldn’t comment, but speculation on the Cape is that the prez - who is scheduled to land on The Rock on Aug. 23 - will make time in his holiday
schedule to see his good friend and mentor.

Kennedy appeared frail and failing during his brief public appearances last week after the death of his sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and did not make it to her funeral. So Obama’s
visit will only happen if the senator is up to it, we’re told.

Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May 2008 and he already has survived the disease longer than doctors had expected. He has spent most of his time in
Hyannisport sailing Nantucket Sound aboard his beloved schooner Mya since his cancer battle began.

Kennedy’s son, U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), told The Associated Press last week that he and his 77-year-old father have spent many hours this summer sitting on the porch
of their seaside home, sharing old stories about family, friends and politics.

*********

I hope they have good visit and get to just sit together for an hour or so.

1. This health care bill and this fight needs to be dedicated to Teddy
Maybe even name the bill after him.

3. If it is a good bill name it for Teddy
If it is a bad compromise, it would be an insult to name it for Teddy.

What would Sen. Kennedy want in a bill if he were well enough to submit and fight for one? Has he presented health care bills in the past?

10. Agree.. so long as it has a GOOD public option. Ted deserves that.
I HATE that Ted isn't able to fight for it now... he would certainly be a great advocate for public option (actually I'm sure he wants single payer, but that was never on the board).

2. I haven't seen the "brief appearances" he made after Eunice's death --

so sorry to hear he appeared frail and failing (but guessed as much as he didn't attend her funeral).

It will do his heart so good to know that Obama is fighting the good fight for health care - I hope the visit gives Obama renewed strength for this fight that's going on.

Totally agree with bluestateguy about naming the plan after him. What a legacy.

What a wonderful pic of them! Thanks for posting it!!

Edit to add -- Yikes! Just re-read this and noticed it says he's "survived longer than doctors expected". Boy, that's sobering. Maybe he's hanging on to see this thing put through (like my mom waited until my brother got into town before she died).
