Robert Novak, Chicago Sun-Times Columnist, "Prince of Darkness" died Tuesday

WASHINGTON--Chicago Sun-Times columnist Robert Novak, one of the nation's most influential journalists, who relished his "Prince of Darkness" public persona, died at home here early Tuesday morning after a battle with brain cancer.

"He was someone who loved being a journalist, love journalism and loved his country and loved his family, Novak's wife, Geraldine, told the Sun-Times on Tuesday.

Novak's remarkable and long-running career made him a powerful presence in newspaper columns, newsletters, books and on television.

On May 15, 1963, Novak teamed up with the late Rowland Evans Jr. to create the "Inside Report" political column, which became the must-read syndicated column. Evans tapped Novak, then a 31-year old correspondent for the Wall Street Journal, to help with the workload of a six-day-a-week column.

58. Agreed.
Last of the investigative journalist breed, in the Jack Anderson mold. That he was so wrong about so much during his lifetime doesn't detract from his accomplishments as a reporter who transcended media (newspaper to TV).

He opposed the Iraq invasion, lamented his role in the Plame affair, got increasingly bitter and mean in recent years. The glioma likely prevented him from fully comprehending how far he had fallen at the end.

Prayers to his family.

33. We can always hope that DeLay will suffer some kind of extremely painful groin injury
on "Dancing With The Stars!"

At a minimum, he will make a total ass of himself-- in fact, he already has just by agreeing to be on the show.

As for Novakula, he was a bad person and now he's dead. Sad for his family, but otherwise no loss to this world.

22. I wish death on no one. If he chose to not turn around his life before the end
then that is his mistake but wishing death on anyone and enjoying it does nothing for you or me as people. It changes nothing about who the person was or how they acted. Many of us here chose not to be for the death penalty.

I am sad for his family. That is about as far as I can go.

26. why are we always admonished to protect the feelings of family...
....of despicable people who have worked to destroy democracy?

Family members have profited from that labor, haven't they? They knew what was happening, didn't they?

Are we expected to hush up about Dick Cheney's life when he goes in order to protect his wife and daughters? Well? Well?

It's a silly expectation. And it's wrong. And it perpetuates attacks on the democratic process and the American people.

102. I try to remember that Teddy is ill with the same disease....
and the right hates Teddy probably more than we hate Novak. I will be truly upset if he gets this kind of reaction from the right as we are giving Novak. Don't get me wrong, I hate Novak's views, but he has a family that is sad right now, and they don't deserve this. Add to that I'm really glad that Eunice Shriver got the respect she deserved upon her death. You don't need to respect the man, or honor him at death, but his family is still alive and grieving.

Condolences to his family.

and offer his advice on treatments and doctors. However, Novak had had a cancerous tumor on his kidney a few years ago, perhaps weakening his body and making it more difficult for him to fight this latest round.

That damn disease is everywhere!! I've seen too many people get cancer in the last few years and none of them are/were old. I know someone at work who is 44 and has cancer of the tongue. The even sadder part is that she's never smoked. Is there a cancer epidemic in this country?

Years ago I thought Richard Perle held that moniker, then Dick Cheney, and also Novak. In any case, though I disagreed with most of what Novak said, I always enjoyed him and Michael Kinsley on Crossfire. Novak actually had a pretty good sense of humor and was entertaining.

62. The Bells - Edgar Allan Poe
For the Dark Prince:

Hear the tolling of the bells--
Iron bells!
What a world of solemn thought their monody compels!
In a silence of the night
How we shiver with affright
At the melancholy menace of their tone!
For every sound that floats
From the rust within their throats,
Is a groan:
And the people--ah, the people--
They that dwell up in the steeple,
All alone,
And who, tolling, tolling, tolling,
In that muffled monotone,
Feel a glory in so rolling
On the human heart a stone--
They are neither man nor woman--
They are neither brute nor human--
They are Ghouls!
And their king it is who tolls;
And he rolls, rolls, rolls, rolls,
A paean from the bells!
And his merry bosom swells
With the paean of the bells!
And he dances and he yells;
Keeping time, time, time
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the paean of the bells--
Of the bells;
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the throbbing of the bells--
Of the bells, bells, bells,
To the sobbing of the bells;
Keeping time, time, time,
As he knells, knells, knells,
In a happy Runic rhyme,
To the rolling of the bells,--
Of the bells, bells, bells--
To the tolling of the bells,
Of the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells,--
To the moaning and the groaning of the bells.

77. I agree - DU should stay classy
God knows we have adversaries, but death is not the time to gloat and do high fives. We, as Dems, should be above that - our compassion sets apart from the knuckle dragging rethugs. I did not like Novak, and took issue with everything he said, but he is gone, cannot speak for himself, and his family is in mourning. Because we are compassionate people, that needs to be respected.

That said, if he was to be resurrected tomorrow, game on.

One Sunday morning Novak lost his eyebrow in a cup of coffee, funniest dang thing on political tv, his reaction (or lack of) was worthy of an Oscar. We junkies were fewer and farther between back then, does anyone else remember that happening?

My condolences to his family.

91. Personally, I don't find the hypocrisy expressed by many on this site to be classy at all
People despised the man and his lack of integrity during his life, and are now all wishy-well after he's died.

It may not be so classy to dance on the guy's grave- but some of the comments we've seen here are even worse.

101. "like a metastasized tumor"

45. Robert Novak

Charges: The absence of charges, for one. While the Valerie Plame leak scandal has taken down one prominent reporter and tarnished the reputation of several others, Novak—the one who actually printed the leak—remains inexplicably unscathed, unless you count the profane bout of crankiness that got his satanic ass bounced to Fox News, where, after all, he really belongs. Either Novak has secretly revealed his sources, damaging his already dubious journalistic credibility, or he is simply so well ensconced in the Washington power structure that he can’t be removed, like a metastasized tumor.

Exhibit A: The sheer, dreadful, angler-fish ugliness of the man, which can only be explained by the gradual accumulation of several lifetime’s worth of misanthropy, or possibly possession by demonic entity.

Sentence: Finds himself chained to a desk with James Carville; figures out he’s in hell only after several weeks pass without winning a single argument.

132. My God. You think a person's subjective view of himself is a measure of his virtue?
I suppose you think Hitler was swell, too.

Afet all, he believed he was a good German who loved his country.

Novak was a propagandist for an anti-democratic plutocracy.

He committed treasonous acts against this Nation and I stand by my opinion that he was a RAT and a traitor.

but as funny as I find that moe-ism, it just doesn't seem adequate in many circumstances.
