Why the NBC/WSJ "brand-new" poll is should be ignored
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 11:54 AM by ProSense
And according to a brand-new NBC News poll, 47% of Americans -- a plurality -- oppose the public plan, versus 43% who support it. That's a shift from last month's NBC/WSJ poll, when 46% said they backed it and 44% were opposed.

Voters settle on a public plan:

Despite the sturm und drang among politicians, a public plan generates barely a ripple of controversy among voters. In the last two months, no fewer than eight polls have found strong majorities favoring a public plan. When different pollsters, using different methods and different wording, all converge on the same answer, you can bet the public really does support a public option.

The highest level of support came in a survey sponsored by a bevy of corporations and conducted for the Employee Benefit Research Institute, which found 83 percent in favor of “creating a new public health insurance plan that anyone can purchase.” Just 14 percent opposed a public plan.

So last month, when poll after poll was showing that "strong majorities" support for the public option, the NBC/WSJ was showing almost a statistical dead heat?

Edited to revise title.

1. They're just continuing the current meme
that the PO is dead and/or should just be "given up", forgotten, "the votes were never there," etc. Of course, it isn't over but they are trying to make it look that way and stir up liberals/progressives- and, of course, it's working. :eyes:

2. I smell Astroturf
If they can convince people that most people are against the Obama plan, it doesn't matter what most people actually think.

3. With all these Lies about it and the MSM propping them up there is no surprise here.
There was sure to be a poll that reflected the ongoing made-up bad press about the public option...I mean, didnt you hear: the public option will bring in death panels!! They will kill the elderly. The polls are sure to be affected negatively with those...And thank goodness the press 24/7 repeats the lies and have no rebutals against them.

5. Comparing NBC/WSJ numbers for this and last month, it's in good shape.

Plus there is this from NBC/WSJ:

In a follow-up question explaining the benefits and disadvantages associated with a public plan, 45% said they agreed with the description -- by supporters -- that it would help lower health-care costs and provide coverage for uninsured Americans.

Still, support for the public option has been much higher than that in other polling.

Edited word for clarity

6. That's not bad shape.
Not bad at all.

Any serious structural change gets hammered from everyone unhappy in the least. It is impossible to keep it popular.
But once it passes, watch, it will be supported.
