Gibbs isn't very convincing on the public option...
At least I don't think so.

You can watch him here now at the "watch live" link:

1. He's tap dancing as fast as he can.
If we get a public option, it'll be a miracle.

4. the weasel words don't help
not at all. If they have some other plan to get there I don't see how looking so weak right now does them any good either way.

2. Im starting to think there is a deal with the insurers
And that part of the deal was to cut costs in exchange for mandatory insurance and no public option in the eventual Baucus bill.

The administration acts like they really want the public option to just go away.

3. I do believe you're on to something here.
My best guess is we'll end up with mandated insurance, no public option, Co-ops, no pre-existing exemptions.

7. insurers certainly love the mandate
Now everybody has to sign up with them, whatever costs cut now, would blow up at some point. I doubt they agreed to more regulations that's for sure. If I was an insurer I would want a mandate and then a few years from now renege on any deal that viably cuts any costs at all, especially long term costs. Politically and from a good policy standpoint, I just don't get what the administration is doing here.

5. it wouldn't surprise me
I think I am a little more positive about this than many around here, but they sure look awfully weak right now.

11. But there is no way, without a public option, that the cost cuts will hold.
Once insurance is mandatory, there is no leverage to ensure compliance. Costs will continue to rise, because there is no 'stick' to wield if they do. It's all carrot, and the insurance companies are the wabbit.

9. never said whether I was convinced or not
Just said he is not very convincing, which he isn't. He's tap dancing around the issue altogether, nothing more to add to it.

13. well it's really not his word
It's the words of several different people and he was dancing around answering the questions. Does nothing but make the administration look fundamentally weak and for no reason.
