Heard a few minutes ago from Shuster: WH "insists President Obama prefers a public option."

Of course he does. You'd have to be moron not to. But preferring and insisting are simply not the same thing.

I'd prefer he insisted.

4. I don't think so.
If you've seen the way they're obviously holding back from saying the public option is a must, you have to see they're in the process of jettisoning it.

14. I see 4 of the 5 bills with the public option in it and Congress saying it won't make it without it.
So no you are 100% wrong.

16. I guess we'll see what gets passed and signed.
And I'll bet a much as you like that it won't contain a public option.

17. Congress doesn't have enough votes to pass it on without it. Period.

26. And it would appear the Senate doesn't have enough votes to pass it WITH it.
So maybe we get nothing at all. At this point, I'm not sure that's the worst possible outcome.

27. We literally are a handful of commitments short on the Senate.
Harry Reid should at least be able to manage a handful of Blue Dogs, that might be overestimating his abilities, but I think thats realistic.

5. I'd prefer he would LEAD on the issue.
Instead of behave like a pink-tutu, Tome Daschle-style sell out.

Anyone who worked for this on his behalf should feel betrayed.

8. Ah good!!
Yet another post calling the President weak. I love these ya know why? Because it's all we heard from his primaries against Clinton right up to the general election against McCain and we all know how that turned out.

Sorry, but I don't feel betrayed by the man. Now if you ask me if I feel betrayed about Congress then yeah, you'd get a positive from me.

9. Some in Congress, especially the House, are standing up to be counted
In the face of the president's weasly betrayal.

It is our president who is letting us down.

I hate it, but there it is.

20. The word of a single congressman cannot completely control the debate.
Whereas, every utterance of the President does. He is saying measured words publicly, and then will clamp down on Congress privately as the bill matures.

6. I 'prefer' fillet steak and champagne
but have to settle for minced beef and beer.

All I'm hearing is 'prefer' & 'favor' - these are mealy mouth words with massive wiggle room. It is typical DC back peddling.

If he doesn't get over this trying to make everyone happy problem he has, its going to hamper his presidency.

15. Hey! What's with this thread?
I love dorkulon's play on words. And yet d is being picked on as an Obama hater? C'mon! All of us who fknow that the public option is the ONLY way to go for real health care reform, real cost controls (if we can't have single payer) are very very nervous right now about losing it. The words being played with here, after all, are Shuster's, not Obama's.
I am sending letters and making phone calls and praying. I suggest that all of us at DU take a deep breath, get back on the phones and the fax machines, and stop picking on each other.

I admit to being frustrated. But you're right; if we don't apply pressure then we leave it to the opposition to do so.

24. Keep the powder dry, eh?
Seems like we've been hearing a lot of this lately. "Impeachment will come, just wait for Conyers to get his shit together." Remember that one?

Even if you're right, it's appropriate for Dems to be hearing their constituents scream bloody murder over this. They ought to know it's important to us, especially since the other side are literally brandishing firearms.
