GM announces rehiring of some workers and production hike
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 06:00 PM by Kdillard
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/economy-watch/2009/08/gm_announces_first_production.html

"For the first time since the company filed for bankruptcy, General Motors is hiring back workers and adding overtime to meet higher-than-expected demand for cars and trucks, The Post's Peter Whoriskey reports.

The company will reinstate 1,350 workers and add overtime for about another 10,000, the result of a broad surge in sales at least partly due to the government’s "Cash for Clunkers" incentive program.

The rehires represent only a small portion of the tens of thousands of GM workers who have been laid off in recent years, but the news is a marked turnaround from just months ago when the company was undergoing bankruptcy proceedings.

"We’re running much hotter," Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president of U.S. sales, said in a conference call moments ago."

Thought some good news might be in order.

2. Yes it is great news. Hopefully GM comes back strong next year
and are able to get the new electric car off the ground. If they are able to make a go of it and gain traction hopefully more jobs will be added in the next few years.

4. I totally agree... It will be the gift that keeps on giving.. green and greener
We are on the precipice of a new world economy involving the greens. We have been sitting flat on our butts for the last 8 years with the oil guys in there, and China passed us up in wind energy and green jobs.. but still the greening of America will give us many jobs working on turbines etc.. building turbines.. its a brave new world

3. Great news. And most people here thought Obama was destroying the auto industry.
That's been debunked time and time again with the build up of Ford and GM and probably more in the future. That's corporatism at it's best it seems....

Thanks for the news, only sunlight in this pile of shit that's all over the site. Man.

Traded in my clunker for a GM - I've been saving 60 bucks a week in gas trading in an old 6 cylinder pick-up for an HHR. Kind of losing some of my lesbian cred getting rid of my truck though, LOL!

Then I would suggest you find someone to do a makeover.

I'm sure there are other ways to gain it back. Within the limits you might have.

Of course, there is nothing that says you can't change the expectations.

10. How long until they make a good car?
Isn't that normally a 3-5 year cycle?

11. Well they must have been doing something right because until a few years ago and with bad management
decisions they were the number one auto maker. If you don't like GM there is always Ford.

12. something right = massive bailout?
If I don't like them, there's choices out there that don't sell a UAV POS.

Let me know when GM can figure out how to make a car that isn't:
1. An insane gas guzzler
2. Dangerous to occupants
3. A danger to everybody around it

Last I heard, they were still making assault trucks.
