The Art of Dumb: "The Constitution doesn't say anything about gov't-sponsored healtcare"
Edited on Tue Aug-18-09 06:14 PM by brentspeak
You've probably heard variations of that theme hundreds of time by pro health-insurance lackeys.

Can any of these bizarros come up with an answer to this simple question: "Where in the Constitution does it say anything about federally-funded highways?"

While they're busy self-destructing into flying sprockets and bolts and screws like a Star Trek computer being talked-to-death by Capt. Kirk, here's some more to ask them that will finish the job:

"Where in the Constitution does it say anything about federally-funded Veterans' Administration hospitals?"

"Are veterans communists because they receive treatment at the VA?"

1. Be careful with that. Keep in mind that the 6th amendment in the Bill of Rights created the FAA.

3. Sometimes I'll bring up that healthcare is just as relevant to defense as the military or police...
...which of course are socialized defense industries that are either socialized on the national or local level, respectively.

5. I think they'd have an easy answer to that one.
They'd say, well, there's no comparison, the government at that time had no concept of a highway system people drive cars on, but they would know all about healthcare. They did have doctors and whatnot back then.

I know they would say that, because I know a lot of them. Some of the smarter ones, anyway. Of course, that doesn't mean it wins the debate, just means it's a logic argument that would disarm the question.

The second question I think is a good one, but their answer to the first one would derail the second one.

anyway, I'm glad you posted this, because it prompted me to see if there was any discussions around that hit upon this point. I found this:

http://www.civildiscourse.com/index.php?showtopic=863

Never heard of the site, seems kinda libertarian leaning from what I've seen so far, but it was kinda nice to see a reasoned discussion about this issue.

The Constitution DOES say something about life and the pursuit of happiness, though--which are much easier to have when you have your health!

18. "promote the general welfare, ..."
I think a single payer or public option(S) has become a vital necessity to promote the general welfare.
And that brings me to something else. Public Option is always spoken of in the singular. Why couldn't their be Public OPTIONS? Doesn't have to be just one does there?

8. It's under "promote the General Welfare".
D'oh!!

Two cases decided in 1937 said that New Deal programs (Social Security) were permissible and constitutional under the General Welfare clause.

9. It doesn't say anything about an Air Force, either
Yet we have one as a separate branch of service because the times demand it. Funny how nobody every complains about the USAF being unconstitutional.

For the record, I think the Air Force is just fine.

11. The Constitution doesn't even mention electricity and computers!

Don't think it directly mentions pot or alcohol. I'll have to check on that!

17. I think they get paid -- something like a gift certificate to Arby's.
Otherwise I can't imagine why they bother coming here in the first place. They rarely make it past one hundred posts and not one DU regular cares about what they have to say.
