Marc Ambinder, http://politics.theatlantic.com/2009/08/forget_liberals_white_house_senate_double_down_onbipartisanship.php">citing unnamed White House officials (thereby http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/8/19/769379/-What-theyre-saying-(anonymously)-at-the-White-House">adding to the parade of anonymity), says the administration believes progressives will agree to dump the public option because health care reform will include "a goodybag" including a legal mandate that all individuals purchase coverage from a private health insurance plan.

snip

Keeping in mind that this anonymously sourced report could be total bunk, it's worth pointing out that axeing the public option and requiring individuals to purchase coverage under a private health insurance plan would be a horrible political miscalculation. If you think we're having problems selling health care reform now, just wait until we try to explain why all adults under 65 will be required to purchase health insurance from the private sector with no public option.

Oh, you're not interested in making that argument? I didn't think so.

When coupled with a public option (or the sort of rigorous regulatory regime which isn't under consideration), a mandate achieves universal coverage and cures the free-rider problem. But without the public option, the private sector will have a monopoly on a product the public is required to buy, and over the long-run you'll almost certainly see premiums skyrocket and quality of care plummet...

3. There are stupid people who they know will believe this.
The media is trying to sabotage the public option.

4. Don't give vague answers to specific questions. Are you attacking Marc Ambinder?

If not, then what is the point of your commenting here on "the media" other than to change the subject by attacking the messenger of this article?

8. If that's the way you want to look at it.
Not the first time he has been wrong. This smells like a media campaign. The notion that the WH believes progressives want a mandate is ludicrous.

9. Why is it "ludicrous" considering all the lobbyists and DLC idiots inside the White House?

10. The only person who counts when it comes to what the WH believes is Obama, and
it beyond ludicrous to claim he believes progressives want a mandate.

5. This is unbelievable to me b/c Obama opposed mandates during the primaries
He was right to do so because support for mandates on adults would have totally alienated his young adult supporters. It was always pretty obvious to me that Hillary supported mandates because her base was mostly older people with families who had insurance and Obama didn't because his base was young single people who are less likely to have stable jobs or insurance. While polls show that the majority of Americans favor mandates, mandating private insurance on young working people who can barely afford to survive as it is will be politically disastrous. 70% of people under 30 vote Dem and we could lose a lot of those people for good.

7. And how exactly would that bring down costs?
If there's no competition from a private option and there's no regulation that forces insurance companies to lower premiums, how will this help us? Do they plan on subsidizing everyone?

12. Mandates are to the left what tort reform is to the right.
Conservatives blame malpractice suits for the high costs of health care and (many) liberals blame the uninsured. Lawsuits account for about 2% of the average premium and the most generous estimates attribute about 8% to the so-called "free riders". Of course, there's no guarantee that mandates will automatically reduce premiums by a proportional amount since a) I haven't seen anything in any plan that requires insurance companies to do it and b) those companies will also be prohibited from excluding preexisting conditions so the costs of caring for those people may very well offset whatever is gained by having more young and healthy people in the plan.

11. There should be no subsidies for private insurance.
Edited on Wed Aug-19-09 07:43 PM by Eric J in MN
If someone can't afford to buy private insurance, then give him Medicaid.

Subsidizing private insurance will make extremely rich CEOs even richer.

16. Everyone should be able to get Medicaid. No means testing.
Just like the public schools, the police, fire departments, etc. Get the insurance parasites out of basic health care. If rich people want to buy private policies to subsidize their health care, fine.

It could easily be accomplished and would probably cost the average person a helluva lot less, in terms of taxes, than whatever they're paying for health care now.

13. Hard to imagine anyone in the WH being quite THAT stupid
A legal mandate to buy insurance from the very crooks who have created this mess is a "goodybag"? They may want to try to sell it but I have to believe they know they would be sunk with Progressives if they did so.

14. Dumbest. Idea. Ever.
Forcing people to write a monthly check to a greedy private corporation is a sure fire way to make enemies and lose voters.

With a public option, you can at least hide the cost in a person's tax deduction so people don't see exactly how much they're spending for health care. You can also manage the costs because the government is the one buying the services.

15. The DLC - blue dogs - big pharma - insurance copanies ...
seemingly pulling Obama's strings best not EVEN ASK for the support or votes at any time in the future.

No more insanity of supporting democratic candidates who, once in office, TRASH their base as "the left of the left."

18. Because of several months of screaming matches during the primaries over mandates
With Clinton, Edwards, and Obama each doing their part to diss uninsured people. A mandate to buy private insurance with no public choice is EXACTLY what I feared would happen and I think it's what we're gonna get.

19. If the White House thinks that it is stupid. What the WH thinks is that
liberals will support Obama no matter what he does because they have nowhere else to go. It is wrong. We can only be ignored so long. I have been fed up ever since no one investigated the Bush war crimes. And all those DUers who said that the WH was waiting to get its important agenda, as in health care, accomplished. Ha! Ha! What do you think now? He has basically done nothing to promote a good bill on health care.

21. You know, both Hillary and Obama endorsed a "mandatory" plan during the primaries
And NEITHER of them mentioned a universal "public option". I should mention that Obama only mentioned mandatory coverage for children.

And he mentioned a public plan only for large businesses to pay into, not federal funds.

http://www.healthinsurancecolorado.net/blog1/2008/09/17/obama-and-mccain-on-mandatory-health-insurance/

So, I'm confused.

Does Obama REALLY want an unlimited public option?
