Obama should think twice about insulting the public with a phony public option
Once again, a "public option" that not everyone can participate in and that doesn't provides legitimate competition for the private insurance companies cannot be called a "public option" It could only be accurately called a "con", a "swindle", and a total, unquestionable "betrayal" of the American people.

Anything other than a real public option would simply bring Obama down to the same depths of a Bush who labeled the Iraq War as "the war against terror".

I'm still waiting for a clear explanation of why,
when he admits the health insurance companies are dishonest, he's so determined to pass a bill that protects them for years to come.

Nothing Obama or Congress (except those who support single payer) are pushing guarantees better access to health care. The only thing he's promising is that most of us will be forced to buy insurance from the for profits (something he didn't support when he was looking for our votes).

42. Well when he says my family does not deserve equal rights under
the law because of his religion, that is pretty freaking insulting. My partner and I have been together longer than the Obama have been, and he states that we should not have equal rights.
God says I'm better than you. That is insulting in my book.

I've actually contributed to every single fund-drive but the last two (going back as far as the existence of this board, though in other guises). I've been kinda boycotting because of the condition to which GD: P has been allowed to descend. But still, the search feature and some of the other contributor features are great, and it's hard to get used to not having them, so thanks again!

cheers.

Occupations that had large numbers of minorities or women like teachers, laborers and domestic workers. The NAACP called it "a sieve with holes just big enough for the majority of Negroes to fall through.”. Going the by the OP's logic Social Security as passed was an insult.

30. What does Social Security have to do with a giveaway to private insurance companies?
Edited on Thu Aug-20-09 02:37 PM by brentspeak
Social Security is a government-only program that was able to be expanded over the years. No private corporation has ever had their hands in it, so citizens have not had to fear being robbed/abused by them. The proposed health "reform" bill, on the other hand, is a giveaway to private insurers that must somehow, by some miracle, be shrunk over the years. Fat chance of that. Do you realize what a private mandate will mean? It means the government will be forcing everybody to purchase health insurance from private health insurers -- whether they can afford it or not, whether the insurer will rape the hapless policy-holder financially or not. The very few who won't be qualifying under a non-universal public option will have screwed more ridiculously at least as much as Bush or Reagan managed to do.

38. Where in the hell is there a "private mandate"? I mentioned the social security example...
...because it illustrates the beginning of a means that later led to a good end. Though I'm sure you knew what I was getting at, you just don't want to admit it.

Some perspective would be beneficial. You'd leave slaves in captivity until Jim Crow could be resolved. Many would rather take some baby steps towards progress rather than spend 15, 20, 50, 100, or 200 years awaiting that perfect time to take a quantum leap.

29. That is incredibly short sighted!
I didn't vote for Obama... I say this because I want you to understand I am NOT an apologist with a knee-jerk reaction.

Think about this for a second.

Even if the public option is only available to certain groups of people (ie, the currently uninsured and those who do not receive health care through their work), it is a VERY important step forward.

IF the plan is good and works well (which I suspect it will), then those who are excluded will demand to be INCLUDED or have the right to be included. "Why do these poor people get excellent health care why I am stuck dealing with this sh*&ty insurance company?"

The important thing is that there IS a public option AND that this public option is well executed. A poorly executed plan that doctors are ultimately upset with and frustrated dealing with is not going to lead us where we need to go.

At the end of the day, the execution of a public plan is FAR FAR more important than the number of people covered at this time!
