Aug. 13-17 Poll: : 51% Say Afghanistan War Not Worth Fighting
In 2003 it was reported on DU that 54% of Americans thought fighting in Afghanistan was a good idea.

Today the AP reports in an ABC News-Washington Post poll that 51 percent who were polled said the war was not worth fighting. Afghanistan is the graveyard of empires.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A majority of Americans say the war in Afghanistan is not worth fighting, according to a poll released on the eve of that nation's elections.

An ABC News-Washington Post poll found 51 percent who said the war was not worth fighting, while 47 percent said it was worth it.

Only a quarter in the poll favored sending more U.S. troops to Afghanistan while almost twice as many would like to see the number of troops decreased. At the beginning of this year, people were slightly more inclined to say the number of troops should be increased than decreased.

Three years ago the U.S. had about 20,000 troops in Afghanistan. There are expected to be about 68,000 by year's end.

1. Enough is enough.
Bring them home. The Troops, the Bureaucrats and the War Profiteers. Bring them all home.

2. This war is on the back page, and the troops have dropped off the page.
These wars don't make much sense, and they are bankrupting our country morally and fiscally.

Shut the wars down and bring the troops home.

4. That country has broken the back of the British Army in the 19th century
and the Soviet Army in the 20th. It is a bottomless pit - it will consume as many lives and as much money as we throw into it and will not change. I am afraid we ate trying to make it into another "little America" and this is doomed to failure as was the same idea in Vietnam.

6. Initially, I supported the war in Afghanistan........
but when shrub "cut and run" into Iraq, I felt that we had/have little chance of stabilizing Afghanistan. Trying to finish something that was started (and ignored) 8 years ago seems a bit foolish.

7. Jeff Stein says liberals are deserting Obama on Afghanistan
But I think it is more complex than that.

Seventy percent of Republicans still back the war. But what are they fighting for? Bush's legacy? Democracy? Crushing the Taliban? Apparently the new mission is 'nation building.' As Steve Chapman said, why don''t we try nation building in Mexico, a country that is a lot more important to us than Afghanistan? If it looks like a quagmire and quacks like a quagmire ...

8. The problem is the alternative.
One can probably assume that the Taliban would take over the gov't again either by elections or by force. Back to square one.

I don't know of any big payoff for staying but the consequences of abandonment could be even worse--as Bush I proved.

The situation sucks.
