3. She is into Santeria? As a Afro-Latino myself
I'd be pleasantly surprised if she is into such an intricate and misunderstood religion. I don't practice it, but the cultures of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Brazil and several other Latin American countries are influenced by Afro-Hispanic religions like Santeria, so in my personal case that's part of my cultural heritage. I have to say there is a lot of beauty in that religion (as in most, if not all, religions) and of course some crazy stuff...

By the way, if you have ever danced salsa, there is a big chance you have been indirectly in contact with Santeria.

By the way, I don't think Barack would express himself like that about a religion that has more roots in Africa than Christianity, Islam or any other religion...

6. Santeria? Weak. You want to keep it real you go for straight up Voodoo!!
Edited on Thu Aug-20-09 12:19 AM by vaberella
Being Haitian and all---Voodoo is the good stuff. Not as good as African Voodoo, but if you need a quick fix you go there. Or Columbian Voodoo (their's is some crazy shite). ^_^

I'm sorry, I didn't take the article seriously. I think it's hilarious.

They're just trying to black list (excuse the pun) Michelle's mum, or they think they are. They've done it before and they're doing it again. I'm shocked actually that the witch thing wasn't brought up sooner.

19. Oh understood. The article got it wrong too...something about witch craft but then Santeria.
It's rather nonsensical when you think about it. In the medicine religion they're not even "witch doctors" since it's more like they're healing priests. Hmmmm....I'm not too good with Santeria (I'm more konwledgeable on Voodoo), I just have the basics. In any case both religions are just Catholicism by other cultural names. So think of it as Catholicism that still does sacrifices (just not human ones) with everything renamed and a strong belief in the magic (or miracles) so propogated in the Bible. However, that's the basics, Santeria and Voodoo are different in their own ways too.

26. They are both a mix of Catholosism and old African beliefs.
I believe Vodou is West African and Santeria is more specifically descended from the Lukumi people in Nigeria.

11. Sounds to me as if this is another round of, "Booga booga booga - Scary Black people are in charge!"
They tried to associate Obama with Ayers to make him look like he was a scary Black militant who would have been bombing by his side if he hadn't been 8 years old or whatever at the time.

They tried to do it with his preacher, who from what I could tell from all the clips played of him, never said anything worse than what Falwell and Robertson did about God cursing/damning America; it's just they had different reasons (racism versus homosexuality), and one of them wears "weird" clothing and is louder than the others.

Then the whole birth certificate thing; the Madrassa thing; the picture of him in African clothing, etc.

Black people! Oooga booga booga!

Well, keep it up, repubs. You can't survive as a party of old, white guys for too much longer so keep pissing off all the other ethnic groups - like Hispanics - that at one point, you had a chance with.

As for the Santeria, I'm sure it's not true but just another "look how different Blacks are" scare tactic. Unfortunately, there are going to be people who believe it as well as believe in the so-called supernatural mystique about it like they do about other hoo-ha like faith healing, demon possession, talking in tongues, etc.

Edited on Thu Aug-20-09 01:12 AM by winyanstaz
surly you don't believe the Christian propaganda of what a Witch really is by now?
I thought everyone knew by now that Witches dont worship the Christian anti god Satan.
Sheesh..they have their own beliefs about God.
Satanists are bent Christians..they are NOT Witches, they are Satanists.. although they like to call themselves Witches.
Witches are healers and sometimes herbalist and or sometimes midwives and are a gentle peaceful people.
Chances are there is one in your family tree who is too dang afraid to tell you.
I have known many of them living in the Pacific Northwest and the worst you can say about them is some of them like to go naked in the woods and hug trees and love the Goddess/feminine aspect of the universe and the welfare of the planet. sheesh...

21. The article made no mention of satanism or any of that nonsense.
Plus they got the shit wrong. Apparently they say Michelle's mum believes in Santeria ---which doesn't make her a witch or wiccans since I believe Witch is not PC any longer. In any case, Santeria doesn't have "witches."

24. This is relatively off topic... somewhat on
This post and then my Booga Booga Booga - Black People Are Scary reply just reminded me of something.

At one of my former jobs, I was the lead programmer of a small website creator company. Everyone in the company except for me was conservative, and most were VERY religious, especially the project supervisor, who was a pretty nice guy. I'm an entertainer on the side (magic and balloon twisting) so I always had a deck of cards in my hands when I was reviewing code, and I was very loud in my opinion that there was no such thing as "real" magic, but just scumbag charlatans using the same skills and knowledge of human foibles that regular magicians use but for evil purposes.

Anyway, this project manager found that opinion interesting though he didn't quite agree with it, and he wanted my opinion on something that had happened to his mother when she had been a missionary to Africa. It seemed the short version was that the local "witch doctor" of the area she was visiting put a curse on her, and she became violently ill, and his mother had to leave for a big city hospital and never returned to finish her mission, even after she got better. He wanted an explanation of that. Of course, I had none, but I told him to flesh the story out more and tell me everything he knew about the trip.

When he did, he told me that the witch doctor had actually presented his mother with a gift of welcoming. I stopped him right there and asked him, "So you don't think that maybe there could have been something on the gift or the package it was in that made your mother sick instead of some sort of blaming it on some magical power?"

He was quiet for about a minute before finally admitting he had never thought of that. Literally, I could see the gears turning in his head as he considered it. He had just assumed that "Black people = Scary Unknown Powers."

This was a nice guy too - not one of those crazy people yelling angrily about birth certificates, etc. - but for the most part an even-keeled, smart guy but not raised to think critically about "supernatural phenomena" but to accept them wholeheartedly, and there was the good kind - miracles performed by Christians and the bad kind - everything else. And these kind of scare tactics are going to work on them.

Giving some spirit to the White House. Obama could use some magic instead of this foolishness trying to make nice with those that would just as soon fry him for dinner and eat him. (that's the Republicans he so wants to love him and never will in case you were wondering) I personally find Obama cold but love his family. Also his brother in law is the coach of the BEAVS.
