By Kristin Jensen and Joseph Galante

Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she won’t be able to pass health-care legislation in her chamber if the measure doesn’t include a government-run insurance plan to compete with private insurers.

“There’s no way I can pass a bill in the House of Representatives without a public option,” Pelosi, a California Democrat, said at a press conference in San Francisco today.

The idea, a central component of President Barack Obama’s effort to overhaul the nation’s health-care system, has emerged as a flash point in his party. Suggestions by administration officials in recent days that the White House might be willing to give up on the public plan drew protests from some House Democrats.

Edit..

Okay my fellow Democrats.. time to band together.. back out reps, show them that the majority of Americans want health care, and we are going to get this done

14. Please don't touch that table Nancy
We want to believe you this time.

That would be a real star if she can pull this off.

6. Looks like she caved...
in the right direction this time.

Pelosi's actually been good about this, so it doesn't come as a huge shock.

11. We really do have a solid, hard-working team going after this legislation for us. I believe it will
all work out in the end and that POTUS Obama will sign a health care bill with a strong public option by late Fall.

Chilling out is always good too! ;)

13. does she have 218 with a public option?
thats the question

If she doesn't have 218 without, and doesn't with a public option, I don't know what to make of this story.

Her leadership on this has been weak.

15. Before the recess, she said she had the votes to pass a bill with a public option
The problem has always been the Senate.

17. Yeah, I believe there would have been about 240 with a public option. Some Dems in
conservative districts would have voted Nay to appease their constituents, only after it was sure of being passed.

18. No matter what happened in the past, Nancy has been a solid liberal on the stimulus
and health care reform and has had the President's back. Reid is much weaker in my opinion.

19. Good! I'm glad she didn't "take it off the table."
She's let us down before. Hope she sticks to this.
