Snowe: Senate Finance Committee Bill Won't Have Public Option

By Rachel Slajda

Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME), one of the "gang of six" Finance Committee members negotiating a health care reform bill, said today that the committee's bill will not include a public option.

"We have not had the public option on the table," Snowe told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell. "It's been co-ops, and addressing the availability and affordability of plans through the exchange."

Snowe's comments affirm weeks of speculation and hints that the committee would not incorporate the public option into its bill.

When asked later about her statement, White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton said only, "The president has said over and over that his goal is to offer more choices to bring costs down ... and the best way to do that is a public option." But if there are better ideas out there, Burton said, President Obama is open to them.

Kill it in committee and have the Senate vote on the HELP bill.

Public option, with or without them. Period.

Updated to add this from Daily Kos:

Source (via Democratic Underground) includes a video of Snowe saying, in June, that co-ops were useless.

Oh, that's rich!

2. Exactly, Ma'am: The Finance Committee Monstrosity Will Not Be The Senate Bill
If it is, the Republicans will come close at least to taking one chamber of the Legislature in 2010....

3. Remember, the goal is- choice and competition.
The public option would only be a sliver of any reform, anyway.

6. Time for the PRESIDENT to shut this farce down.
I'd say it is OVER TIME.

They are undermining reform with every second this goes on.

Stop the mealy-mouthed doublespeak (which I think is what is REALLY huriung the president's numbers) and get to work on the business of the people.

9. I respectfully disagree
I have never seen anything as incompetent as this.

I am beginning to think they planned to lose this all along.

That would actually make the most sense of what we are seeing.

13. It may appear to be incompetence to you, but
Obama has been consistent

The moment Obama signs a health care bill, his numbers will go right back up. What we're seeing now is the influence the media spin has on Repubs and independents.

17. i don't see consistency from Obama or the Dems, what I see is
Confusion, mixed messages, incoherence, weakness, contradiction.

I am really shocked by this terrible performance.

Is this a (White) House divided?

8. Ah the warmup before Reconciliation
Well Olympia will be able to tell her folks that she really really tried but they lost on public option in reconciliation. She doesn't like it but has to vote for it anyway.

14. That's the committee that Baucus decided to put 3 Dems and 3 Repubs together on...
to work out their version of the healthcare bill... if I'm not mistaken. Super majority in the Senate, and Baucus decides to run his committee as if there weren't any majority.

Maybe this is some sort of sociology experiment? This bill is the placebo bill for a study of the working of government?... Hells, if this is the form that the Senate bill eventually takes, then I will have to admit to my brother that he's been right all along, that there's no point in voting.

15. Reid is the leader though. Why is he letting Baucus do what the hell he wants?
Sorry but this crap wouldn't happen to Trent Lott or McConnell

12. No problem, Olympia. That's why we're dividing the bills up and
voting on them separately. But we're excited that you've given us the opportunity to use lots and lots of footage of you and your cohorts obstructing health care reform and taking a stand against public option when you run for re-election. By then the public option will be law and you'll be screwed.

Have a nice day.

16. I thought they needed to pass the bill out to get the finance piece out
Edited on Fri Aug-21-09 03:53 PM by karynnj
Then, they can kill the plan and keep the financing piece when they get the Senate bill. Is there another way to get the financing piece, which help doesn't have out?
