1. Oversimplified? If a majority support the death penalty, the president should support them?
No, I don't think it works that way.

2. One could also argue
the people need not support the President if the President holds a position they do not hold. Perhaps "supporting the President" is an oversimplification.

"No, I don't think it works that way."

What is "it" and how do you think "it" works?

3. K
No matter who's in office, sometimes a citizen supports them and other times they don't.

Conversely, sometimes the office holder abides by popular opinion, at other times they don't.

Ideally, when they act counter to public opinion it's in the long term interest of those governed.

Of course it never works out precisely that way.

4. "sometimes a citizen supports them and other times they don't"
When someone says, "You need to support the President," what does that mean?

"Ideally, when they act counter to public opinion it's in the long term interest of those governed."

The difficulty comes from people have very different ideas about what is best for us.

5. "We" voted for the platform he ran on as much as "we" voted for him.
Now, "we" expect him to live up to it!

6. Is that like, "Wives should support their husbands?" vs. "Husbands should support their wives?"
When in fact, the reality is that spouses should support each other.

And that's my answer.
