Washington Post fashionist Robin Givhan criticizes Michelle Obama for wearing shorts

In a piece already online and to be printed tomorrow (Sunday), Washington Post's fashion journalist Robin Givhan weighs the pros and cons of Michelle Obama's choice of shorts during a recent vacation trip



Givhan once criticized Hillary Clinton for showing too much cleavage despite the fact you could barely see anything, as you can see:

Continuing her piece on Michelle, Givhan concludes:

Avoiding the appearance of queenly behavior is politically wise. But it does American culture no favors if a first lady tries so hard to be average that she winds up looking common.

I saw Robin interviewed last week (maybe by Matt Lauer, I forget)... And, the interviewer thought the shorts were fine for the Grand Canyon, but not for disembarking Air Force One. The interviewer asked Robin if she thought Michelle should change in the car?!?

Isn't that a word snobs use to criticize their fellow snobs for looking too much like people who don't have as much money, status and "breeding" as they do?

"Ugh, she looks so common." Meaning: "She looks like any Jane Doe on the street, when she should look better, because she IS better. Ewwww."

Got a flash for you, honey: Maybe Michelle Obama doesn't take pride in trying to look as if she's somehow superior to the rest of the world. Maybe she likes fitting in. Maybe she likes relaxing and not being on the stage all the time when she's on vacation, not feeling compelled to look like she's walking down the runway exhibiting the latest in "casual wear." Heaven forfend.

Everyone wears some sort of shorts on vacation unless they are going to Antarctica. The royal Princesses of various nations even wear bikinis. Does she consider them common too? When did our fashion industry start becoming conservative?

Her legs are the muscular trim legs that I've seen on athletes. Some designers just hate women as they demand they be so skinny that they look like malnourished boys.

I think it only bothers older women and conservative types
the older women (in 70's) in my bookclub were talking about it last week. I haven't heard anyone else say anything about Michelle except nice things.

I don't agree with her about Michelle Obama ... and generally don't even read what she writes, but she is at least an equal-opportunity fashion critic (Repubs as well as Dems), according to Wikipedia.

No lady should be seen in public without a hat. And not one of those practical sun-shade ones: a demure little pillbox type. With a mini-veil, of course.

Oh, and that dress had better have sleeves - unless you plan to cover up with some dead animals.

Actually, I thought the shorts looked a little too informal, considering those military types had to be in full uniform. A pair of nice, crisp Bermudas would be ok, though.

I wonder if she weighed in on Palin's stripper look? Red plastic heels with mini skirts? Now, that's common. Or is she reserving her "commentary" for the Democrats?

Michelle is a huge inspiration to young girls and women in this country, esp those of us who are tired of being shown a silent "good girl" as perfect wife in first lady. The right always has problems with our women. Screw 'em. I have problems with their patriarchal barbies.

Michelle rocks. End of story.
