Sen. Schumer contradicts Sen. Conrad

Conrad has spoken out against the public option, and has said there are not enough votes in the Senate to pass it. But Schumer on Sunday said including a public option is vital to reducing the long-term costs of healthcare.

“It is indeed essential to getting the cost down, which is our No. 1 problem,” Schumer said.

He also contradicted Conrad, saying he believed a bill with a public option could pass the Senate with no Republican support.

“I believe at the end of the day we’ll have a public option," he said. “Frankly I believe we could get a public option that could be passed with the 60 Democrat votes we have.”

I'm sure they can find the votes for the public option that is in the HELP bill.

by not even addressing the post or the issue, but slamming some posters that you don't identify, who are, after all, on YOUR side?

2. In the end we will get the 60 votes

As difficult it will be for a few like Conrad it will be impossible for them to stand up the combined weight of the House of Representatives, The President and the rest of the Senate caucus.

There will be some face saving gesture, something that they can take home to brag about but in the end it will not be substantive and they will all vote yes, I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of Republicans from Blue states join as well.

Of course this is all dependent on the House and the Whitehouse maintaining a common front.

8. Martinez abruptly announced his resignation the day after Justice Sotomayor
was confirmed to the SC. He said that he was going home on vacation and would not return.

Crist is going through a bunch of applications to pick a successor.

9. Ah. I totaly missed that story
so Crist gets to pick the successor. He doesn't seem like the guy who wants to screw with his party too much.

But, them losing one is less important than 2 of our 58 being sidelined. Its not 41 to sustain a filibuster its 60 to break a filibuster, mores the pity. Now that I think of it, though, it really should be. If you want to stop something from being voted on, the onus should be on you to prevent it, not everyone else to overcome your your individual objection.

10. Crist has a big problem. He has already announced that he is going to run for the seat
but he announced that he won't pick himself for the seat.

So he has to pick someone who is perceived as competent but not ambitious enough to actually run on their own.

5. We don't really have 60 Dems. who could vote (Kennedy and Byrd). We'd need 2 moderate

7. I don't think many people would mistake Schumer for a progressive hero...
but he is a bright guy, and as chairman of the Democratic Senate campaign committee he wants to win, and he surely realizes that healthcare reform without public option would be a millstone around Democratic necks in 2010.

me to think that Conrad does not want the Dems to win in 2010..only caring about his dino status in North Dakato..only giving a shit about himself and his massive ego..and perhaps his campaign chest?

He could vote for public option and hold his Senate seat just fine. Granted, North Dakota, as a Republican stronghold in its state politics and presidential voting, is a state whose congressional Democrats are probably wise to avoid taking a big and visible leadership role in the Democratic Party nationally, but healthcare reform with public option would be a winning issue there.

What the freak is Conrad's agenda and why is he screwing over Dems and the People?

17. Be aware, tho, that Schumer ALSO said the PO needs to be on a level playing field.
And no one seems to know what that little phrase means.

Still, it was heartening to hear a lone voice out there in medialand saying what we in our guts feel to be true: a public option is necessary to control costs, and there ARE the votes for it, if the Democratic leaders insist on it. (Altho the PO may have to be weak in the beginning, I'm guessing, to get some voters on board.)
