Here's a snap shot of the progress Obama, Dems are making toward passing a bill with a public option
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 10:06 PM by ProSense
June: 37 Democratic Senators support a public option for health care reform and Landrieu was a no.

August: 45 Senators support a public option and Landrieu is a don't know.

Pressure and Progress:

Sen. Baucus: "I want a public option too."

Blue Dog Jim Cooper responds to Kos Poll showing him in trouble, pledges to support public option

Bingaman: I’ll Support Passing Health Care Reform Through Reconciliation

Reed sticks with Democratic line on health care in online chat

Sen. Jack Reed defended the Democratic approach to overhaul the health-care system Tuesday in an Internet exchange with readers that broke little news but underlined some persistent public worries, such as the price of medical coverage and the prospects for improvement under President Obama’s plan.

“Health-insurance reform has been nearly two decades in the making,” Reed wrote during an online chat with readers of Projo.com, using the term that Mr. Obama has begun to favor when referring to the drive to remake the health-care system.

“We still have a long way to go before passing it through Congress and getting it to President Obama’s desk,” Reed replied to a reader who wrote that “the government is trying to shove a health plan down our throats.” The Democrat enumerated the congressional hearings held and legislative amendments being considered in the still-unfinished process.

Reed’s hourlong chat featured few of the fiery exchanges that some town meetings with public officials have seen this month.

<...>

Reed reiterated his support for the public option, a government medical insurance plan that would compete with private insurance plans. That proposal has come under heavy fire during the August debates.

Obama supporters plan pro-health overhaul push

Obama looks like he's in a great position to get a bill with a strong public option.

4. Baucus would be. Cooper is in the House. Bingaman is one of the Gang of Six
so his support for reconciliation is a plus. Reed already supported the public option, and he's out there at town halls making a strong case for it.

This is real progress.

6. It looks like GrASSley and to a lesser extent Baucus overplayed thier hand
They are about to get rolled over. Grassley could have come out of this looking like roses(relatively; after all he is a republican). But instead he looks like a complete fool.

10. That apparent foolishness of Grassley's very well could be the key that changes the overall debate.

14. He repeated his support to local TV news in his district. I
don't think he'd do that if he planned a switch.
