Did the New York Times just demand an investigation of George W. Bush?
Edited on Tue Aug-25-09 11:18 PM by Becky72
NYT editorial:

"The report offers one more compelling reason for a far broader inquiry into Mr. Bush’s lawless behavior. It is possible to sympathize with Mr. Obama’s desire to avoid a politically fraught investigation. But the need to set this nation back under the rule of law is no less urgent than it was when he promised to do so in his campaign.

That will not be accomplished by investigating individual interrogators. It will require a fearless airing of how the orders were issued to those men, and who gave them. Only by making public officials accountable under the law can Americans be confident that future presidents will not feel free to break it the way Mr. Bush did.

7. The ball is in motion. A prosecuter has been selected, he won't be
retracted.

It could take years, but it's not going away anytime soon. Thankfully.

18. I agree with you on this. No, it can't wait.
Getting an investigation started Now will mean that the special prosecutor will only really be digging in by the beginning of next year, maybe. There is going to be a whole lot of stonewalling, and ignored subpoenas, and information is going to be dragged out inch by inch. If it doesn't start now it won't get any traction by the end of Obama's term.

It can't wait. It has to start as soon as possible.

3. No, building the case cannot wait two more moths
never mind that it will take more than two months to build, rules of evidence and all that horse shit to take into account.

Wheels of justice go round and round and round, but do so at glacial speed.

13. I wouldn't worry about that
if the case does broaden it won't for some time so I see no conflict with health care.

27. NO it can't! We are a talented, inventive people, and we elected a talented man as President.
BOTH can happen! I defy ANYONE to make this into an "either/or" situation.

This is some of the strongest wording about investigating the illegal actions of bush*/cheney* we have heard yet from the Old Grey Lady. It is time...well past time!

29. I doubt that Holder and the special prosecutor will be derailed by health-care reform. n/t
I don't doubt, though, that whatever happens will take much longer than two months.

6. If this ever comes to a trial or confrontation/hearing...
Bush will scream like a pig that Cheney made him do it.

I hope the popcorn is still fresh enough for the occasion.

19. Wow! The New York Times finally acknowledges the Bush responsibility
after years of covering it up, delaying or burying stories about it at Bush's request, or denying it outright.

You can always say one thing about the New York Times, they can certainly hit hard, once the accusations have become common knowledge and politically safe.

:evilfrown: :eyes:

"It is possible to sympathize with Mr. Obama’s desire to avoid a politically fraught investigation."

Why? To be NICE? Because it's not CONVENIENT? Because Congress set the precedent of abdicating their sworn duties to the Constitution, so this POTUS has that same luxury now?

:wtf: is wrong with this COUNTRY?
