NYT: Kennedy Funeral Arrangements Set

Kennedy Funeral Arrangements Set

By Kate Phillips

The official tributes and funeral services for Senator Edward M. Kennedy will begin on Thursday morning, when his body is carried by motorcade from the family compound in Hyannis Port to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston.

There, his body will lie in repose beginning in the afternoon and evening for public viewing, and again on Friday. On Friday evening, a formal wake will be held at the library, with Vice President Joseph R. Biden and Senators John Kerry and John McCain among the notable featured speakers.

On Saturday, a funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica. President Obama will speak at the mass. Afterward, Senator Kennedy’s body will be carried by plane to Virginia, where a burial ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery will take place in the afternoon. The times have not yet been officially released.

Both Senator Kennedy’s brothers, John and Robert, are buried in Arlington, and it is expected that the senator will be laid to rest near them.

In a separate tribute, President Obama has ordered that flags fly at half-staff on federal buildings and at the White House in memory of Senator Kennedy.

The family has established several memorial sites and tribute areas for him. For the sharing of public memories, it has asked that people connect with www.tedkennedy.org. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to educational programming at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

fourth brother. I heard some young thing today (forgot on which station) who made some comment about Ted living longer than his two brothers. She looked a tad confused when someone else mention he was the only one of 4 brothers to live into old age.

Even this article with saying "Both Senator Kennedy’s brothers..." wouldn't the correct wording have been "Two of Senator Kennedy's brothers are buried at Arlington."

I suppose I'm being petty, but it does bother me that Joe, who died in service to the country has apparently been forgotten. I'd bet it would bother the family as well.

2. The only requirement for becoming an on-air newsreader today is
a pretty face and a slim body. What's between the ears - which generally isn't much - doesn't seem to matter.

4. You nailed it!
That's why we have many of the "news anchors" we have today.

Remember the lyrics in the Eagles song,
---------------------------------
'Dirty Laundry'

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
Its interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry
-----------------------------

Isn't that the truth?

:(

8. I know a guy who's been a video editor at a local tv
newsoom in LA for years. He's seen a bunch of on-air "talent" come and go and says today's bubble-heads are the dumbest ever. Serious, knowledgable journalists need not apply.

3. Ok, but you also forgot the sister...
They don't forget Joe.

Americans don't know Joe. They never knew Joe. Just as they didn't know Kathleen.

They knew John, Robert and Edward.

It's not that they're forgetting. They just understand the two other Kennedy brothers had a far greater influence than Joe & Kathleen.

and given that all 3 of the older brothers died early and violent deaths while serving their country it seemed odd that Joe was left out.

Kathleen died in a plane crash while on her way to a vacation (though didn't she work for the Red Cross during the war?).

There have been 4 sisters who predeceased him - Kathleen, Rosemary, Eunice & Patricia. Jean Kennedy Smith is the only surviving sibling.

13. Why does it seem odd?
Joe isn't a very well known Kennedy. It's just the way it is.

John was a president and assassinated while serving as president.
Robert was a senator, AG and assassinated running for president.
Edward was a senator, who carried on the legacy of what his TWO brothers started.

Joe might have a place, but to most Americans, it'll always be: John, Robert and Teddy.

15. I guess because I am old enough to remember
when Joe was mentioned more and I'm sure Ted would want him remembered with his other two brothers.

16. I'm sure, but I can understand why they don't...
Because when you think of the Kennedys, you think of Jack, Bobby and Teddy.

Rightful or not, that's just how it is.

I mean, I get that you feel he deserves more mention, but to many, he isn't at the level of the other three brothers. And he certainly isn't as known.

9. Joseph Kennedy Jr.
Joseph Kennedy Jr. was killed when his B-17 exploded over the English Channel in 1944. There was nothing left to find. It is thought that the explosion was caused by one of the bombs exploding prematurely. Joseph was supposed to be the chosen one but his death caused his father to ask Jack to step up and the rest is history.

7. Probably have an easier time going to the Kennedy Library open
Thursday and Friday...lying in state.

Easier parking, or take the bus from the T.

I know the distance would have been significantly less but it still would have been wonderful symbolism.

14. Watch out for passing hurricanes
Tropical Storm Danny is about to head up the East Coast, and though some of the forecasts show it veering out to sea like Bill, others have it scoring a direct hit on eastern Massachusetts on Saturday evening, possibly as a Category 1 or Category 2 hurricane.

See, for example, the map in this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6393206

The worst-case scenario may not come to pass. And it's a fast moving storm, so the viewing and wake on Friday should be fine -- and so might the Saturday morning mass. But trying to fly down to Arlington for a Saturday afternoon burial could run into some problems.

20. It looks like it will be stormy on Saturday...a summer storm, but
but not a big hurricane.

Then we will see him in a plane flown from Boston to DC......

100 million people will see the images..no train needed.

21. Not to hi-jack the good thoughts
of this thread but my first thought was who will and when will they protest at the funeral.

Randall Terry?

Fred Phelps?

They dishonor the living and the dead, it's all the same to them.

Sorry for the interruption!
