"As a mark of respect for the memory of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, I hereby order..."
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 01:09 PM by Clio the Leo
From the White House....

Senator Edward M. Kennedy was not only one of the greatest senators of our time, but one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy. Over the past half-century, nearly every major piece of legislation that has advanced the civil rights, health, and economic well-being of the American people bore his name and resulted from his efforts. With his passing, an important chapter in our American story has come to an end.

"As a mark of respect for the memory of Senator Edward M. Kennedy, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States of America, that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on August 30, 2009. I also direct that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff until sunset on the day of his interment. I further direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same periods at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

"IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-sixth day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand nine, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth."

Barack Obama

21. Good grief - every office building, home and school in MA
has lowered their flags. WTF is wrong with your state office? (Sorry, not picking on you, didn't even check where you're from... just grouchy today I suppose.)

23. Sorry to hear that
And please forgive me for this but your governor is a jerk.

Although, if I'm reading Obama's declaration right, that flag better get to half-staff pretty quick. :)

They get to play ignorant until tomorrow - I've called those who can make a difference and they said "he probably doesn't know" - they will probably have this corrected tomorrow.

24. Are they required to do so?
I guess the wording could have been clearer, but I see the order incumbent upon all Federal buildings only.

"...that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on August 30, 2009."

Flying at half-staff might require a formal Governor's decree or something. Not sure if any State (red or blue) has done that.

2. Very fitting... and now that the funeral mass has been announced as
being held Saturday in Boston, I guess Obama will have his vacation cut short to go to it...

Think of the police and security headache Boston will be this Saturday, with dozens of dignitaries from around the nation and the world...

I wish they would do the service in DC. DC is equipped for this sort of thing.

14. Of course, it is appropriate, and my selfish wishes to do it in DC are
just selfish. I think of all the overtime cops and Secret Service, and all that stuff.. but that's my background.

I like the idea of him lying in state at the Kennedy Library, for Boston and New England people to go to.. free, a museum, a place he had a hand in building.

The church for the mass is not the Washington Cathedral, in a cramped part of town... not easy access.

4. Bad for us
We have a three hour drive into Boston to catch our flights out (my wife to Paris, me to Dallas).

I guess we had better allow a little more time.

6. I fully expect it to be announced that he will lie state .....
.... at the Capitol by the time this is done.

The only thing that would prevent it of course would be the family's wishes, but I think everyone would agree it would be very fitting.

I think he should return home one more time.

11. Senator Kennedy was one of the three longest serving senators in the history of the
U.S. Senate. Furthermore Kennedy led and played a key role in passing some of this country's most important social and civil rights legislation.

I think it is the President'S prerogative to decide when the flags will be flown at half mast.
This occasion is significant and should be honored.

Thank Dog.

We don't elect Kings here.

We elect a President, head of the Executive Branch of our Government.

It's the Legislative Branch of Government who make the laws.

The President can't appropriate funds, for starters. Secondly, you're advocating that governing like Bush is okay when we do it?
