Kerry's statement on Kennedy has put the Republicans on the spot
Kerry:

I mean, you know, my question to Orrin and to others is, you know, who is the Republican? Who are the Republicans, plural, who are prepared to step up and do as Ted Kennedy would have done here?

link

Orrin Hatch, and the rest will have to explain why they can't find a way to support health care reform and honor Kennedy's memory. In essence, it's time for the Republicans to put up or shut up.

If the NYT editorial is any indication, the Repubs are going to be left behind:

Majority Rule on Health Care Reform :

We say this with considerable regret because a bipartisan compromise would be the surest way to achieve comprehensive reforms with broad public support. But the ideological split between the parties is too wide — and the animosities too deep — for that to be possible.

<...>

So how much of the proposed health care reforms could plausibly fit into a reconciliation bill? The answer seems to be: quite a lot, though nobody knows for sure.

Knowledgeable analysts from both parties believe that these important elements of reform will probably pass muster because of their budgetary impact: expansion of Medicaid for the poor; subsidies to help low-income people buy insurance; new taxes to pay for the trillion-dollar program; Medicare cuts to help finance the program; mandates on individuals to buy insurance and on employers to offer coverage; and tax credits to help small businesses provide insurance.

Even the public plan so reviled by Republicans could probably qualify, especially if it is given greater power than currently planned to dictate the prices it will pay to hospitals, doctors, drug companies and other providers, thus saving the government lots of money in subsidies.

6. And while Politico is reporting that "the President has extended his vacation..."
We ALL know he's going to be burning up the WH phone lines.

..... and miles to go before I sleep....

14. One of the reports said Obama is going to be at Camp David for the week
I wonder if he will be inviting various Congress critters to visit and discuss things? I thought about that since another TV talking head said that LBJ would lean on them by inviting them to dinner in the private areas of the White House and talking one on one. He said that getting them in a different atmosphere changed the dynamics.

2. Orin Hatch doesn't have to explain shit. He's a Republican
and will never vote for a healthcare plan. It's a huge political defeat for them merely by passing anything.

They will never, ever compromise even if you give them everything they want. If they do, it will be a political defeat for them because it's a win for Obama.

Once the Dems get this through their thick skulls, we can start the reform process. DO. NOT. CONSULT. THEM.

3. Exactly. And since the Rethugs live in bizarro world they'll go on TV accusing

the Dems of whatever it is that they themselves are doing. I still can't believe how they clearly have no conscience and use that tactic over and over again. Flat out lies.

8. I hesitate to differ as Hatch has done little to help
but, the SCHIP story suggests that he will back a plan if he is ideologically in agreement with it. SCHIP was the biggest expansion of the government's role since the 1960s, but on this show he is still proud of it - and he calls it "center right", though looking at the roll call shows few agreed. The question was whether anything like that - which retains the purpose of the bill, but eliminates some fears on the parts of Republicans could work. The question now is how much more work can reasonably be done before trying to get just all the Dem caucus.

10. What makes this a GOP killer
is that the Dems don't really need them. Hatch keeps talking about Kennedy, has been since before his death. Hatch is going to have to put up or shut up. Step up and be a part of history or get left behind. This is too sweet.

13. GOps tried to glorify themselves with Kennedy's bipartisanship then refuse to show up and act
in an honest bipartisan effort.

Thankyou for putting Hatch in the corner on that Senator - wish more talking heads noticed.

16. Kerry and all Democrats need to make the point that Kennedy had a bill on the table...
in the HELP committee and Orrin, McCain and the other Repukes voted AGAINST the bill.

There was already a Kennedy bill, the one that they didn't support!!!!! :puke:
