No Senate Seat for Vicki
No Senate Seat for Vicki
August 31, 2009 1:27 PM

The trial balloon launched yesterday by Kennedy friends Chris Dodd and Orrin Hatch isn't going anywhere. A solid source assures me that Vicki Kennedy won't run in a special election to fill the Massachusetts Senate seat. She's not interested in an interim appointment if it becomes available.

Governor Deval Patrick is making an announcement about the special election at 3:00 today, likely setting a date.

A joint committee of the Mass. legislature will hold its first hearing on the succession legislation September 9th.

1. I've heard Dukakis might be considered, though don't know if he'd
be interested.

I'll be watching for Patrick's announcement.

7. Only person that would have the fire and toughness like Ted is Joe Kennedy
who use to piss off Republicans on a regular basis when he was in the House.

11. The Dems only want a place holder and reliable Dem vote
til an election can happen. He's probably too old to want to campaign.

3. I have nothing against him but he's not the friendliest guy on the planet.
I know we can't replace Teddy but to put in a sourpuss like Dukakis might not be the best idea...anyone put in there should have a little more charm as well as smarts and the right stand on healthcare. I don't see the advantage to Dukakis but I do see the down side...

4. He's not as fun at a party as Ted, but I've never heard him referred to as a sourpuss...
He's into the details of legislating.

Give him the four months.

It sounds like there are some good candidates for this post. Even more if you count the folks from outta state!

9. It's only until the special election, as a placeholder
Dukakis isn't interested in running for office at age 75. And he actually is a friendly guy. It's not uncommon to run into him on the subway in Boston, or at the grocery store near his neighborhood in Brookline, MA.

10. I'm sure he is personally. He just doesn't come across that way publicly.
Maybe the temporary thing is just right for him...I dunno...

5. This is from Stephanopoulos?? I'd believe Dodd over him any day.
Wouldn't Chris Dodd have a better idea of Vicki's willingness to accept an interim appointment than that ABC clown. I think Vicki would be a great choice to hold Ted's seat. I think I read some time back that Teddy thought so to.

15. Yes. She's not a politician, anyway. And she's been through hell the last 18 mos.
She needs time to heal, I'm sure.

There are others who are capable of carrying out Ted' duties.

17. She is very political and from an extremely political family. She just
prefers to work behind the scenes.

23. I see. But she, herself, is not a politician, right? Caroline Kennedy found out that it's
very different working behind the scenes and being out front and the butt of attacks.

21. I think they wanted to see if it were possible or likely to happen before asking her
I wouldn't want a repeat of the confusion that surrounded Caroline Kennedy's supposed appointment to Hillary Clinton's seat. Finding out ahead of time if it is even a possibility to happen saves the person from such a mess.

22. No one I talked to in MA felt that she really wanted it
The sense a lot of people got was that she wanted some time off to grieve and figure out what she wanted to do next. I think most people want to give her that.

If she wants something else, in light of how wonderfully and graciously she has acted, she has but to ask the good people of the Commonwealth and they will respond directly to her. We don't need Senators from CT and Utah as intermediaries.
