Huff Post: Glenn Beck Tells Listeners That 2008 Election Was A "Coup"

Glenn Beck Tells Listeners That 2008 Election Was A "Coup"

Oy. Here's your Monday edition of "What daffy nonsense is Glenn Beck cluelessly telling people, on the teevee and or radio." This morning, on his radio show, Beck told his listeners that "they" -- a word he'll use fourteen times inside a minute and a half -- have staged some sort of coup d'etat, that "they" have cleverly disguised as an election. It's only Monday!

BECK: If I could just -- if we could just be like Cuba. Let me give you the last piece of evidence that there is a revolution going on, and it is coming. It is -- there is a revolution, and they think they can get away with it quietly.

They think they -- and they -- they -- you know what? At this point, gang, I'm not sure, they may be able to because they are so far ahead of us. They know what they're dealing against; most of America does not yet. Most of America doesn't have a clue as to what's going on. There is a coup going on. There is a stealing of America, and the way it is done, it has been done through the -- the guise of an election, but they lied to us the entire time.

Some of us knew! Some of us we're shouting out, you were: "this guy's a Marxist!" "No, no, no, no, no, no." And they're gonna say, "we did it democratically," and they are going to grab power every way they can. And God help us in an emergency.

Actually, there was a legal election, which the whole world reported on and witnessed and scrutinized to the nth degree, as a matter of routine. Far from anyone "getting away" with something "quietly," it was well-documented, the way millions of Americans went through the quotidian process of registering their electoral preference, which, when tabulated through the electoral college, yielded a non-controversial result that all sides recognized as proper and legal. I don't know what "they" is out there trying to "grab power any way they can" -- at this point, "any way they can" seems to fail to outperform the legal means of getting elected.

And, of course, there will be other elections, which will serve as a referendum on this current presidency and Congress. There will be one in 2010, as a matter of fact. But Beck, like a baby bereft of his bottle, can't abide the wait. So: hysterical tantrum.

Which is all well and good, and vastly entertaining, obviously. My only constructive criticism is that he should really figure out a way to pace himself!

President. This is why the secret service is working overtime.

Yeah, well, I think we've done that scene a couple of different ways.

Call it a coup if you like, glenn.

6. So, riddle me this, Beck, was McFail a big part of this coup, since he quickly conceded the election
to "them" only hours after the numbers became clear?

This guy is beyond unhinged.

...blah, blah, blah.

Hey, any untreated alcoholic college dropout with an enabling Fox News staff can find a "reason" for just about anything.

There isn't enough tinfoil in the Universe to make the proper hat for Glenn Beck.

10. Well it is a coup... but not the one Beck is thinking of.
A coup d'etat is a taking over of a government by illegitimate or illegal means. Obama, for all of the evidence available, pursued and won the Presidency in a completely legitimate and legal way, by winning a fair election. So clearly, Mr. Beck misspeaks.

I think the "coup" he is looking for is a "coup de grace", a term which means the "blow of mercy", the one that ends the suffering of a clearly vanquished foe, in this case, the de facto legitimacy of his (I assume) political party, its ideology, and its near 30 year stranglehold on American politics and culture.

Just an aside, do you ever notice how they can't tell the difference between a political ideology, an economic system, and a method of governance? They just love to draw equals signs where none should be.

11. Beck really is scary. He spews so many conspiracy theories and makes the Obama admin. & Obama
himself seem so SCARY that it's not surprising the hate and threats of violence are on the rise. He has so many people who believe EVERYTHING he says. He's like a cult leader and the people who shout out at these town halls repeat what he says word for word, not understanding a WORD of it (see Kate Abram).

14. Actually, there were a lot of problems with the election -
but just as in 2006, the republicans failed to steal enough to make the difference.

It's not over yet. We STILL have unaccountable voting machines in place all across the country. There are STILL partisan politicians, instead of a non-partisan or even bi-partisan bureaucracy, in charge of running the elections.

We need to go to hand-counted paper ballots, verified by bi-partisan teams of vote counters. So it takes a little longer than entrusting it to republican electronic vote counters - our democracy is worth it.

15. It is with growing alarm that I monitor what this crazy man says everyday...
I'm getting worried. That one of the major news networks is carrying this guy is a major concern. He has a following and he is inflaming them. They believe this stuff hook, line and sinker. We should be worried. In the old days this stuff would not have made it to mainstream TV now Fox is taking the country to a new low in a bizarre experiment in right wing populism.

I'm concerned. This stuff is going out to a wider audience than we like to admit and the audience is more gullible and dangerous than we like to admit.

this makes me want to bang my head on the wall, seriously.

the elites basically cultivate these foaming at the mouth ignoramuses with their deep ignorance, hate and prejudices (who serve as useful idiots for the elites), it looks like corporate, American-style, neo-fascism/neo-feudalism at this point. keep the masses ignorant, brainwashed, and fearful for their social safety so they make perfect serfs/wage slaves. and most importantly, brainwash/propagandize them into being resentful against any form of social progress.

i don't understand how we let them get away with this shit. truly, home of the Greedy, land of the Gullible.

17. Once again shamelessly projecting
2000 was the REAL coup as Bushcho was INSTALLED by SCOTUS because they choked off the vote counting in Florida when Bushcho was leading in the tally. Had SCOTUS allowed all of the votes to actually be counted, Gore would've won Florida and thus the election. Despite the razor-thin closeness and the highly questionable legitimacy of his (s)election, Bushco then had the unmitigated gall to govern as though he had won a mandate and he and his Republicans "rubberstamped" and pushed a radical "corporatist" and PNAC/neocon agenda on the country via his "war on terror" for 8 long years.
Obama won in 2008 by an estimated 6% spread and 300+ electoral votes. The election wasn't even close and it gave Obama a legitimate mandate for his "socialist" agenda that the public actually supports!!!!

That was an attempt to turn the US into a dicatatorship. So, in a way, 2008 was a Democratic Coup against a potential Dictatorship.
