U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Waterloo, said today he will run for re-election to his House District 1 seat and will not challenge Republican Sen. Charles Grassley in 2010.
He made his comments in an interview with Register reporters and editors. Video of the interview will be posted soon on DesMoinesRegister.com.
Rumors about a possible Braley challenge against Grassley were fanned earlier this month when he criticized the senator for remarks about health-care reform.
He told me he wasn’t running against Grassley in part because he has three kids in college and he’s focused on the work he’s doing on the Energy and Commerce Committee. “To take on a challenge like that, you have to basically do nothing but focus on that challenge,” he said of a Senate campaign. “And right now I’m very happy with the opportunities I have and trying to do the best job I can.”
Two Democrats — Bob Krause of Fairfield and Tom Fiegen of Clarence — are already in the Senate race but Braley said others may join.
“I know that there are people who are weighing the enormity of that challenge but I don’t know that anybody is at a position where they’ve finally decided they’re going to do it. I hear all the same rumors everybody else does, but I have not had anybody tell me, ‘yes I’m going to do it.’ “
