White House fires back at Sen. Enzi

White House fires back at Sen. Enzi
By Sam Youngman - 08/31/09 02:26 PM ET

The White House criticized Republican Sen. Mike Enzi Monday for walking away from bipartisan healthcare talks.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday that Enzi “clearly turned over his cards on bipartisanship” after Wyoming Republican blasted Democratic healthcare proposals in the weekly Republican address.

“It appears that at least in Senator Enzi's case, he doesn't believe there's a pathway to get bipartisan support, and the president thinks that’s wrong,” said Gibbs, who added that Enzi had “decided to walk away from the table.”

Gibbs said Obama is still “firmly committed” to working with members of either party if they want “to see progress on healthcare reform.”

He called Enzi's comments “tremendously unfortunate” but illuminating in that it suggests Enzi isn’t serious about reaching a compromise.

Gibbs said he thinks it is “tremendously unfortunately that it looks like Republicans are stepping away from seeking a bipartisan solution.”

“I think it's bad for this town, but it's much worse for this country,” Gibbs said.

2. Forget them
All of them.

Bipartisan at this stage means selling out your own supporters just for political cover.

4. Once Obama wakes up and understands that there is no such thing as compromise
...only *capitulation* for these Repukes...only then will his poll numbers return.

Looks like many liberals, Democrats and Independents are having enough of the naive, timid nature of this president.

Mr. President: stand up and LEAD!!!

6. " Bipartisan at this stage means selling out your own supporters just for political cover."
No-the WH is saying they'd still LIKE the bill to be bi-partisan for political cover when they do it alone through reconciliation.

7. Republicans will want healthcare reform compromised to a shadow of what it should be
and then they will all vote against it anyways. An honest effort was made at bipartisanship, but enough is enough. Screw 'em.

10. Obama's playing this just right
The ones who are obstructionists are the Repubs, not us. And they are showing the world this now. I've asked my Congressman when he will be introducing his counter-health care bill. So far, no reply.

and holding up his abhorrent ideas as "something we might work with."

That was insulting to EVERYONE who's been working on health care issues over the years.

REALLY INSULTING considering the hard work that so many put in to stop his federal preemption/junk insurance bill in 2006.

16. heh!heh!heh! Let them keep walking away. That's *perfect*
They're paving the way for Obama to say, "Well, we tried to work with them..."

They're paving the way to reconciliation or whatever it is...51 votes for public option, or even better, extended medicare. And we can happily flip the bird to the obstructionist party of NO.
